  • I think you are right regarding bars... Ideas?

I would also be happy with a Titan or GB under-slung stem.....

I think you should decide on your riding preference first and how much reach you have got when down on the drops.
I found a deep drop stem and bars once and fitted to my track bike and it looked great, but after 1/2 hour it was really uncomfortable on my back and neck. So changed to an old road stem+ same bars and it worked a treat. So if you plan to ride it a lot or a long ride on a Sunday I would go for the latter.
Titan stems clamp diameter is 27mm and as far as I know only Maes Kint bars (they are nice but not track ones) have this diameter so you will need a shim. Nothing wrong with it but will have to fill a 'big' gap if used with early narrow clamp centre of around 23.8 to 25.4mm.
GB underslungs are sweet and if used with a medium drop bar will work well.
Major Taylor stems come up on eBay often, though one went for £161!
Presto is another British brand of steel stems that might be worth searching on eBay.
www.hilarystone.com have got some stems/bars that you might want to buy/use for reference.

  • Steel is real...... I will being trying to track down a lugged steel stem if i can. ......I Would love to find a Major Tayor.

I usually use northroad bars on my bikes. So would like to put those on, but they may ruin the aesthetic of the build.

  • The GB early logo Maes bars that I was going to put on the Hobbs could be yours if interested. Have a look, I think there are some pics in my build thread. Wouldn't Major Taylor be too early for this?

  • re: Bar shape, random bit of trivia, despite a teutonic surname apparently Jack Lauterwasser came from London.
Considering your usual aversion to drops and apparently endless supply of North Road bars It may be worth considering DIY - I know you have some good craft skills, you could fill a pair of North Roads with sand, whack the endplugs in, make some chuck jaws and a bending stick (e.g. a 2' length of 2"x2" with a suitably placed hole to give leverage and bishboshbash the world of handlebar shapes is your (slightly risky) oyster.

I'd imagine you're probably familiar with both of these stems which would be about right in terms of period correctness...

  • I have different Titan stems, no underslungs though.

  • ^^ Two beautiful stems, couldn't go wrong with either.

i have considered doing this for quite a while.....but i cant find any how-to guides...

two fantastic stems, i think it will hard to find a curly lugged stem like your dads....and if i did find one, it may end up costing me a arm and a leg.... maybe two legs.

  • Presto underslung track stem. these sold for nigh on £80 a couple of weeks back.

i was watching this, i was beaten at the last second.

  • I have been in France the past two weeks(hence slow progress with the build). I picked up so interesting bike parts, found these at the bottom of a box of rusty old bike bits. They are part of a three speed Super Champion Osgear set. It's missing the chain tension bar and spoke protector disc. The freewheel is french threaded, so going to need another one of those also.

Considering taking this route with the build(just an idea at the moment)......I would then change the dropouts to Osgear suitable ones....(maybe), and i would need to track down missing parts.

  • ^ osgear bits look fascinating, always loved the chain-route, it has a rather nice steampunky look to it...

i have considered doing this for quite a while.....but i cant find any how-to guides....

Don't know if you saw this link:
    halfway down, someone writes...
I recently got a couple Bike Nashbar mustache bars, which are 15/16" chrome moly steel, with an eye to bending them into a Lauterwassery shape. I did the first one last weekend, using old MTB stems and, as cheater bars, the tubular steel legs from an old conference table. The technique was to mount the two stems a short distance apart, and bend them away from one another; giving me a series of ripples, one between every two places I mounted the two stems. The overall look is good...

Not sure what the writer means by cheater bars, my assumption is that they're just bits of tube to give you a bit more leverage for bending.

  • ouch! not feeling that flush!

  • There are a few more gillotts out there with osgears & it seems from the classiclightweights page that it was the "done thing" to modify frames with the appropriate eyelets etc so it seems like an interesting proposal.

  • As you said above, osgear has a steam punk aesthetic, I really quite like that look. i am also really intrigued to see how they perform.

  • This just arrived. 1st gen 165 stronglight pista cottered chainset. Think it will clean up well.

  • I have decided to take the bike down the Osgear route. When money allows i will replace the dropouts and have it re-painted. I have always wondered what it would have been like to be a rider in the 1930's.... Elgato kindly passed on a NOS super champion pro set. Add a NOS Resilion 3 speed and we have forward motion.

  • nice! do you have access to osgear dropouts?

  • not as yet......i guess that's the next challenge....

  • ^ Hacksaw and handfile I reckon - you'd need some idea of the dimensions though.

if i'm going to get a re-spray i may as well get the dropouts sorted at the same time.

i was thinking about having this type put in.

  • New(old) bars arrived today. I think hey are "Highgate" bed.

  • How's this build coming along? I'd love a Gillott track/path frame!!
