Get a 1.8 and you won't have to save.
DOF distance between the two is like...2" at around 9 foot if calculations are right.
If you're getting it for low light, then well...you're saving yourself half a stop. You can pull that out of a 1.8 by moving your arms closer to your body.
If, however, you're going for build quality, then by all means, go for a 1.4.
The marketing shtick and number DP review fiends have really pulled the wool over people's eyes. £ for £, is the half to 2/3 of a stop really worth it?
