I tried that route for a while but always seemed to get stuck behind a bus or other slow moving traffic, and the traffic lights by the market always seem to take an age. The Effra road way may be longer but at least you feel like you're getting there faster!

Railton fo sho. If buses really a problem (can't say I'd noticed) can take Shakespeare and Loughborough road. Shakespeare is virtually traffic free - it's eery

Screw Railton (such traffic, many bus, much parked car..) Shakespeare is better and you get to ride past the Hadid-designed school/battleship.

Loughborough > Milkwood with a cheeky left turn at the end is the best route to Herne Hill velodrome (means you get off Brixton Rd sooner and also brings you out the right side of the train tracks in HH - misses all the lights and mess on the park side).
