Things are changing though. Where once you had to apologetically ask a chef to invent something suitable for a vegan, or worse, ask them to take the meat/dairy out of a dish (whereupon you'd be presented with a boring salad or plate of veg and bread) you're far more likely to find at least one vegan option on a menu now, depending on the restaurant/café.
It's also becoming increasingly de rigueur for cafés/coffee shops to offer vegan cakes.
