I don't know what I'm doing with bikes either, I think I want to make the talbot lighter, and get a more practical bike for commuting on
It won't make a difference, I find getting fitter made the bike feel much better to ride, I learnt that from the Genesis when l wasn't in shape, after a couple weeks, it felt much more responsive, comfortable and smooth (okay maybe a bit of position fiddling was involved in that), give it time, give yourself some plan, and work at it, it's also a lots cheaper than a new wheelset.
Your thinking (apart from weight) is why I commissioned the Elephants as a tough all round bike that I can abuse.
Tour, MTB, even TT for shit and giggle, I always like messing with the bike, the Elephant gonna be great for that (700c with 25mm tyres, slammed drop bar and tribar for example).
