  • No, not blue and yellow. Don't like blue very much. It's also the Swedish national colors and don't want to be mistaken for a national team member as I whizz past everyone at supersonic speed. Understated is better, no?

  • Slowly but surely. Base coat applied. Apparently there's been quite a bit of preparation going on underneath, smoothing things out.

  • Is that really my old frame?!

    Looks amazing.

  • I'm sure your preparation work with the stripping and filling in the small dings has helped a lot, DC. The painter told me he thought the surface texture was very good to start with, despite my previous post about 'quite a bit of preparation' :)

  • I'm glad it's getting refinished properly.

My efforts would have been pretty poor in comparison.

You've got to paint it chrome with black decals though.

  • This has inspired me to dig an r1000 polished frame out of the garden. If I remember correctly there is something non standard about the head set size(And mine needs a headset)Can anyone confirm this?

  • What year is it?

  • From memory, 99 possibly?

  • Might be standard 1" threaded. Calipers will tell you.

  • Some had 1 1/4 headsets.

  • Yes, they did, which is why the question was asked. However a quick poke about on the internet reveals a couple of '99 bikes with 1" threaded headsets. But a quick measure with some calipers will tell you for sure what you need.

  • If 1 1/4" there are reducing inserts that can be fitted to allow for 1 1/8" headsets. Check Dick's thread about his 2.8.

  • Settled on a colour. Sorry for the hipster photo effect, don't know how it happened.

  • damn I love these old Cannondale frames. I wish i had one some day. Beautiful colour but my peronal best is the blue from cannon track frame.

  • Word of wisdom with old 'Dales (this may or may not apply to other alu frames) - they have more 'snap' when they're new. 10+ years of riding and any race activity will suck some life from them.
Might well make them more comfy as a result, but it does mean you might get a bit more 'whip' in the BB area.

  • Same. I'd love to do a project like this one day. What sort of prices do these 90s Cannondales go for?

Done The paintjob, assembling, sanding on cranks and saddle recovery myself

  • This was my effort - half way between old and new

Mine was a 93 R900 and had 1 1/4" head tube - near impossible to find a replacement headset - I settled on using a reducer I got off ebay which reduced the head tube down to 1 1/8 to take a standard headset and 1 1/8" fork.

Chris King still makes them. I accept that it could probably cost more than the frame's worth though. CK also came up with the Devolution kit to tackle the 1 1/4" 'problem'.

Oh so it's yours! Someone posted those pics on fixedgear.se in my build thread but I never found out who it belonged to. I really like it! You sanded down the crank arm logos? Care to tell more about it?

  • This was my effort

Also an inspiration obviously. Enjoyed your build thread, sorry you had to pass it on.

It is really easy to do, you just need some fine sanding paper, water and clearcoat, but their are liturally tons Of guides that explains it better than i can on the interwebz

  • Due to decal misalignment on head tube I've had to order a new set which won't arrive until next week. And the clear coat can't go on until that's sorted, obviously. But here are a couple of pics of metallic flake first and red candy over that:

Ta- dah! Freudian associations anyone, or is it just me?
