Track Tyres, Indoor and Out

  • Both of my kids have entered the Portsmouth Easter race (that has been moved to Herne Hill). They have only ever ridden their track bikes indoors, does anyone ride indoor and out using the same wheels?

I have never ridden HH and I have no idea what the surface is like (how much debris you can pick up). They only have clinchers so I could buy a set of tyres and swap them over but would prefer not to if possible.

    Any views welcome!

  • Herne Hill has a really good surface and is usually pretty clean, though if they're riding clinchers then it shouldn't be a problem anyway.

I only have one set of posh racing wheels with tubs and I use them at HH and indoors without any issues.

  • apart from all those standing start skid patches, right? ;)

  • Yeah, I take back the bit about using posh tubs at Herne Hill - though I am going to send them back to Vittoria as they advertise Pista CS elites as good for outdoor use. Probably best not to mention my poor form on standing starts...

I've never had that problem with other tubs I've used there and clinchers are still going to be fine.

  • I've not had any problems with regular Vitorria Pista CS tubs there.

  • Thanks for the comments. We'll go with what we have!

  • Does anyone tape tubs for track? I've always used glue, but Planet X seem to recommend it (maybe because it makes it easier to seat the tyre on a rim with internal nipples)?

  • Indoor or outdoor? I think you'd get away with it at Herne Hill, but I wouldn't risk it if you plan on riding at Lea Valley Park.

  • Glue tubs properly with the correct glue.

  • this is what I thought. Have enough to worry about without tyres rolling off.

  • Someone rolled a tub at Odd Down (Bath) a few weeks ago, not a pretty sight. Glue 'em on!

  • Pista CS' are crap, don't waste your money.

This. Had a really bad impression indoor...
First time I have to choose tubs for track, and I wouldn't know what to use...
    What's the best for indoors?

  • I'll explain, I have had two blow while on the rollers, and indoors they are very slippery.

They are also very bumpy around the valve.

I use high pressure clinchers for training and then use better quality tubs for racing.

  • I've not had a single problem with them and have them on training and racing wheels.

I know that Jim got a bad batch at Brixton - lots of blowouts on the rollers and/or warmup track . Same batch?

  • (Have never ridden them indoors but plenty of grip at Herne Hill, even at 140psi)

  • Dan have you used them on indoor tracks? any issues like slipping?

  • Like dan have had no issues with them at HHV will try them at LVVP this weekend and will report back.

I bought from Brooks and Wiggle but possibly, I ended up getting money back and bought Conti temp 2s.

At Newport they are a nightmare for slipping, 35kph plus only.

The Evo and Conti's on the other hand are 25kph.

    ...

  • I don't buy continental tyres, too many bad experiences.

If I was looking at other tubs for indoors it would be Vittoria pista evo's or something like a Corsa CX..

I've completely missed the part that you didn't try them indoor ;)

One thing I learnt anyway, vittoria tyres on track can't be glued on the way you glue them on road wheels, the branding needs to be on the other way.

  • Did stage 3 of the accreditation at LVVP yesterday on the Vittoria Pista CS. They seemed fine. I was a little nervous going up to the top of the banking the first few laps and wondering if they would hold, however. If I were just going to use them indoors I would probably spend more on something nicer. But I will use these both at HHV and LVVP.

  • I asked at the guys in Cycle Surgery at the velodrome if they had any grippy track tubulars and they suggested the Continental Sonderklasse (the only tubs they had)... Anyone in here use them? The price suggest that they are really good, but I don't want to end up too have spent too much if there are cheaper and better options...
