Is it time to start calling out bad cyclists?

  • How many cameras has this joker got? Can't see anything wrong with the move myself. Just standard commuting perils

  • He is probably quite flustered. I have found that after an incident my riding can become a bit erratic, one should really take a moment to calm down before heading off.

I didn't think the incident looked all that bad but I often find those cameras don't really show the danger of the situation that well, the lenses make things appear further away than they are and the size of the image is never going to adequately show the terror of having a huge vehicle charging at you from behind.

  • C'mon guys, are we getting desensitised because of how bad average driving is?

Not leaving enough room is dangerous even if it doesn't mean they're one inch from your handlebar - and if the consensus is that a foot or two will do, people will push the limits. Hence "a car's room"...

My mum and sister asked me yesterday in all honesty "are cyclists meant to go on the left and motorbikes on the right of your car", turns out a bike overtook them on the right and they thought he was breaking the law? FFS these are intelligent people... I had a go.

  • Don't think you're obliged to, although open to being proved wrong, think the relevant part of HC is for cars.

Think about it - the reason is bikes are vulnerable and may wobble/hit a bump/etc. So you leave room in case of that, because otherwise the rider might get squished and die which is bad. In the other situation, cars are much less likely to be moved off their course by a small pothole etc, and the driver is at pretty much zero risk in a collision with a cyclist.

You could argue the cyclist might want to pull out more for their own sake in event of a collision, but I guess that's his lookout..

  • Alright pedant, advised?

  • How much room do those cyclists give when overtaking? To this day, I have never seen one give "a car's room".

a bicycle is not a speeding ton of metal, glass and plastic that can kill if the operator of said vehicle so much as withdraws their attention from the road for a split second.

jesus, do you really need these things explained to you?

  • nice try tho.

I wasn't trying to collide with him.

  • I wasn't trying to collide with him.

nor are most of the people in vehicles who clatter people on bikes, the problem isn't the fact that they're aiming for them, it's they're too distracted too see 'em in the first place.

  • I don't think cyclists who filter or undertake like that should really moan about not being given a full car's width.

no, they should take their face full of steel-belt radials like a man, after all, they probably had it coming what with filtering in an inconsiderate manner and all.

    /you're an idiot

  • We all know this makes sense. But, there other things to consider. Filtering in traffic; driver or passenger may open the door to free a trapped seatbelt or garment, pedestrians stepping out from vehicles that obscure them from other road users, drivers that see a cyclist undertaking so move to the right as a polite gesture but forget their blind spot. Together we could make a decent list, I'm sure.

I don't think cyclists who filter or undertake like that should really moan about not being given a full car's width.

The cyclist in the video, is he mentally sound? Perhaps cycling on the roads isn't best suited to him. I would say he should take up knitting but he'd still probably have an incident.

ignoring angry shouty man - because we are talking about the general situation - 2 wheelers, whether pedal or motor powered, are legally entitled to filter - which is different to overtaking.

Not only as I and greenhell have said are they much less dangerous - and much more vulnerable than 4 wheelers, but also if you are safe you should be filtering at a speed and location that lets you slow down or look out for such hazards. If I'm in the city I'll be filtering at no more than 8-10mph because there are so many besuited peds running out. Similarly slow right down/swing out passing a bus because people run out in front of them.

Obviously the car door opening is a risk, but in fairness they are meant to check before opening, so it's their fault. For most cyclists it's obviously a risk they're happy to take since it's so rare a problem.

  • ^ you really are far too charitable. but strong post regardless.

  • Sorry, he's on my ignore list.

  • Sorry, he's on my ignore list. What you describe sounds quite sensible. Though, a pedestrian could still get hurt being hit at 10mph by a cyclist.

I know the courts don't necessarily agree but there's a common sense toss up between safety on the roads and actually using the roads. Pootling along at walking pace is safest but ridiculous, and obviously pedestrian casualities are 1. more numerous and 2. more severe in vehicle collisions. The best target to reduce the small number of bike related ones would probably be educating people that just because traffic's stopped doesn't mean smaller vehicles - bikes, motorbikes - can't still be coming so stop. look. listen. still applies.

  • To the delightful chap in Ealing in a bright multicoloured top (not Joseph) last night who overtook my behemoth then cut across my wheel and slowed down.

CB: Could you get any fucking closer?
    DC: Yes

Cheeky bastard, was it you HIPPY!

Must overtake the hybrid, must overtake the hybrid...

This morning in Ealing too. A chap with a head cam pulled alongside my left into the ASL then got off after 10 seconds, walked his bike over the lights (at which point they changed) then to get ahead of me again hopped up the pavement because he couldn't fit on the inside if all the left turning static traffic hopped off kerb nearly hitting peds crossing between cars then as a massive fucking lorry was reversing with a banksman and all he hopped up the kerb nearly getting hit by the backswing of the lorry.

I stopped for said lorry so I couldn't point out that I bet he wouldn't put that riding on youtube.

    Fucking the grammar

  • overtook my behemoth

    Euph?

  • Never liked cycling through Ealing. Last time I did I had a massive row with a chap on a brompton.

  • I didn't know hippy had a brompton too

  • Any bike he mounts swiftly becomes a folder

  • I can't beleive there's been two days of talking about self riteous cunts starting fights with motorists and no one's mentioned DJ?

    Righteous, you utter twunt!

  • ^doing it right
    ^^doing it wrong

  • How much room do those cyclists give when overtaking? To this day, I have never seen one give "a car's room".

    Jesus fucking christ.

You might want to fuck off to petrolheads or cyclechat.
