i'm wondering if the chromecast is a good way to travel and watch stuff on hotel tv's etc where they have active hdmi ports and free wi-fi.
I thought that but suspect it may be a bit more of a faff. Most public wifi has discoverability turned off so that you can't see the other devices on the network. As such, you'd need to set up a Wifi hotspot with a laptop (or portable router maybe) for the controller and chromecast to access.
I've used a Raspberry Pi for this.
Saying that, the Chromecast is a nice bit of kit for the price, particularly if you have a Google Music all access subscription. Also useful for watching internet video feeds on your tv through casting from a PC browser.
