The window frames in my new place look pretty bad with paint flaking off. What do people recommend to strip it back with? I am thinking either a heat gun and scrapper or a rotary tool with sandpaper attachment. Pros and cons of each method?

The plan then is either to varnish or repaint depending on the condition of the wood

Heat gun and remove the paint. There will probably a couple of coats of gloss and under coat.
