In these days I asked to Vetta to make me a custom frame and he Incise year and surname on the bb. Not a real anti theft system but quite useful

My buddy had his Cannondale CAAD10 stolen from The Gym, Stockwell this evening. Keeping an eye out on Gumtree, but if anyone sees anything like this knocking about, please let me know
Oh no! Such a lovely bike. (I own one..)

Completely randomly got my bike registered by bikeregister/police today on Pall Mall on the commute. Registered and got a permanent ID number on the down tube, took less than 5 mins. They said they are going to be in Wellington Gardens tomorrow 8-11 am.

Hopefully not TOO randomly, or it wouldn't be much use if your bike did get nicked ;) -

Yea, he's still paying it off through cyclescheme..pretty shit. On top of that, I think I saw someone riding it round the corner from our flat yesterday morning..not really much you can do in that situation though!

Useful & sadly too late; had my Surly (of 7 years) pinched on Mare St earlier today. They thoughtfully left my Krypto neatly locked back on the post! This advice will hopefully stop a 'next time'.

Keep a close eye on Gumtree. A friend of mine found his stolen Fuji on there, with a phone number and address, a few days after the theft. Once he told the police the bike was back in his possession within 24hrs.
A rare story of success though. -

You mean the lock was picked?

Not sure but it looks like it. Left it locked to a tall lamp-post on a busy corner for ~30 minutes. Came back and the bike was gone but my lock was still locked in place to the post. I did toy with the idea of replacing the lock a few years back when I saw how easily Kryptos could be picked but it was new and expensive at the time. It's a Krypto Evolution (small orange one)?! Gutted to lose my Surly, to say the least, naturally!

Just in case: it was a Surly Steamroller (~2006 build - maroon). It would have stood out a bit as I had 'pimped' it up a bit. Dropped BLB 'Fubar' handlebars, purple grips, Nito seat and wide flatliner pedals, no straps or clips.

Also: original front wheel (chrome) but rear wheel (all black) replaced with a deeper rim Leader wheel I managed to find cheap last year.

I had my T1 nicked but after 2 months the police recovered it in immaculate condition...system sometimes work i guess. It is a characteristic bike though...

That doesn't sound like it was picked, if it was they wouldn't take the time to lock it back together... Was it a cylinder lock (the top one in this picture)?
Could the way you locked your bike not have been quite right? (i.e they removed a part and it freed the bike)

It's not quite the same as those pictured - but one of these http://www.lfgss.com/thread584.html (maybe an older model as I bought it ~7 years ago).
To be fair - I can't remember precisely how I locked it this particular time; it's a habit after a few decades of riding. Having said, that I usually lock it around the seat or top tube (if no clearance). Food for thought and more attention by me I guess!
Then again, maybe they wanted me to continue using the same lock if it can be easily removed and put back!

Slightly off topic, but what do you do if your bike gets run over?
I had my bike locked up on a pavement bike stand, and came back to find it mangled/written off. The driver who ran it over did honourably leave his phone number and reg details, and i am going through the process of trying to claim it through his insurance company, but i don't have a receipt or anything for the bike, so not sure if i have a leg to stand on, anyone had a similar scenario?
Seems like a useful site, it's about time bikes had the equivalent of a cars hpi check!
