Dov, if you are using the new Shimano (I think you are using 6800 on this?) then check that the band on adapter that you are using puts the mech in the place which is specified by the Shimano manual- a lot of them put it too far back.
This is a particular issue with the newer Shimano mechs as they, as you point out, "stick out" rearwards a lot.
That aside they work a lot better in the correct place relative to the BB.
