Just to let everyone know, the police are totally useless at tracing owners.
I bought a bike from an auction, stolen recovered by the police. Had it listed on ebay, just had the police round at 8am WITH THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE BIKE WHO REPORTED IT STOLEN. So even though the bike was found by the police, they couldn't be bothered to actually find the owner and just sent it to be sold.
We came to an agreement that he paid me exactly what it cost me, and it was nice to have such a lovely bike reunited with it's owner, but still left me rather pissed off at all my wasted effort to buy it, collect ect....
