  • This. Is. Spaaarta!!!
    Properly good photo that.

@RedVinkingHood, I like the 40mm focal length on full frame as it is quite wide but still looks natural in terms of background compression etc. The optics are fucking good as well - it happily out-resolves basically every other canon lens and even the extreme corners are sharp at f5, which is great for cropping.
The size is also quite appealing - it makes the full frame body less of an arse to carry around. The only thing it isn't good for is continuous focus tracking of fast-moving objects but that's a given considering its marketed for smooth video focus transitions.

  • What's a dream lens everyone wants to try? I really want to get jiggy with the 28mm 1.4.
    It just looks beastly.

  • This is fantastic.

If it was my face, I would be like

  • I have a micro 4/3 Olympus. It's my first camera. The crop factor is x2 so I would need a 20mm. My understanding is that the angle will be the same as a 40mm on a full size sensor, but will there be a difference with background compression?

You'd get the "background compression" of your 20mm lens.

  • Canon 1000D / stock zoom

The Panasonic 20mm lens is a cracker of a lens, give it a go

  • Anyone on here a Windows user? I bought a WD My Live Book Duo 4TB for backup, but it's REALLY slow on my mac. Totally fine on a PC (tested), but I'm, a Mac user. Apparently this is a common problem, but not really fixable. I bought it at the start of August, so it's still under warranty. Anyone interested? Thought I'd ask here before selling elsewhere. Hardly used it, bought for £250, would sell for £150?

  • Ha I almost bought one at lunch - you have PM.

  • Olympus also have a 17 that a lot of people like; apparently not quite a sharp as the Panasonic but much quicker AF. Steve Huff and Robin Wong have given it a thumbs-up - internetopinions.

  • Is anybody from here on *society6 *and sells his / her photographs through that service?

  • Some pics I took in New Delhi and Agra on X100* (just auto white balanced and lens profile corrected)

*I still love this camera but miss the zoom occasionally.

  • Knowing not much about camera equipment I need to ask you all for some advice.
My brother has a Fujifilm X20 and I would like to buy a flash for him.
I would like to buy one where you can point the flash at the ceiling etc.
Which brands would be compatible with an X20? And which are to be recommended/avoided?

    Thanks

  • I am not using my Fuji flash; its this:

    £70 and its yours

  • Thanks amey, does it pivot up and down?

  • Actually I can see it does. Though as it's a birthday present I'll pass on your offer, thanks though.
So with compatibility, apart from fuji brand obviously, is there a general standard or a multitude of variants?

  • Look away Vesalius

  • That doesn't make much sense to me, seems likely you will get more extension distortion with a 20mm lens. However it might not be that noticeable, I've not tried it.

The other issue with a wider lens is the depth of field. It's harder to create bokeh with a wide lens. So it's easier to focus but harder to isolate a subject. Your angle of view will be the same as a 40mm.

  • I wanted to try and understand this concept myself so I did some reading. Apparently, I could stand the same distance from the subject as a FF sensor with a 40mm and get the same background compression. No cropping would be needed either as the framing would already be the same.

Your micro 4/3 sensor captures only a portion of what the larger full frame sensor would capture.
So yes, the micro 4/3 gets about the same angle with a 20mm lens, as full frame would get with a 40mm, framing would be roughly the same, no cropping needed.
Depth of field as well as "background compression" happens in the lens, so a 20mm does what a 20mm does, no matter what sensor is behind it.

  • Or this;

  • Look away Vesalius

    Oh the tension...

  • I can't open this link..

  • Ok so what exactly is your question now?
