I post everything except freecycle stuff recorded and adequately insured.
I don't charge for the recorded/insurance element, as this is for *my *benefit and not the buyer's. If something goes astray or is damaged en route, then it is my responsibility to claim from the carrier, as it me (not the buyer) who has entered into a contract with them.
With this in mind, I think it is entirely reasonable to expect the buyer to bear the cost of "buyer protection", for obvious reasons.
The rule could do with clarification, because it is ambiguous as to whether PP BP is obligatory or not (I seem to remember raising the point in the mods thread); however the issued of who should bear the cost isn't addressed at all and, as explained above, I feel comfortable charging the beneficiary of the protection.
I was about to refund the underpayment, when I learned that PP only refund their variable fee and not their fixed fee: ie it would have cost me not to receive anything and possibly lose the sale altogether...
