Thanks all for the advice, and @salad for a bit of patronizing to make the point. I'll explain the Apple procedure to Pa slightly more sympathetically and yes, if worse comes to worse I'm sure he'll have the receipt somewhere that he can show.
I get it that this is a rookie problem, just dealing with a dad who's much worse with tech than he'd like to think and was very miffed to hear that things are more complicated when he thought he'd sorted me out. Just old dogs and new tricks, y'all know how it is!

Does anyone know how to set up a Mac that has been used by someone before? My dad has given me a Macbook Pro M1 that he has barely used. He wiped it but I think might have not switched off Activation Lock. Now when I start it up there's no way of getting around Recovery Assistant.
And my old man has given me what he thinks is his Apple ID and pword but that's not allowing me to get in. And he can't remember the pword of the machine. Classic boomer.
I was thinking to go to an Apple store and see what's up. My dad lives in Africa so comms are complicated but maybe he tries resetting his Apple ID and giving me the logins. But is there some alternative? I know there are some special startup options where you hold certain keys on a restart...

Cheers for this, also to Chack and Alf0nse. It's my first shinsplint and came as a surprise as I've been pretty careful about the 10% weekly increase, mobility, progression running mainly... Felt like I'd been hoofed in the shin on Saturday and Sunday but calming now. Still limping a bit but my physio helped a lot yesterday and I hope to do some treadmill on Friday and see how that goes.
It's a bummer but if any week's not a bad one to sit out it's when snow and sleet arrive. Just really hoping that I can get back at it soonish and it won't be an interminable or recurring problem. Doing all the shin splinty exercises right now.

Balls. Did a few longer runs in the week and Friday a long-ish one in the morning. Felt fine and went through the day but towards evening a pain in my front lower shin had developed. This has grown after a short slow jog on Saturday and small walking. I can actually hear the tendon creaking when I move my foot up and down so pretty sure it's shin splints.
Real bummer but what now? I'll have to do a bit of walking to get to the office and was thinking I'd go for a swim to see if that helps. I can see plenty of stretches and rehab exercises for once the initial pain subsides but not sure how much of that I can do now. Are there any gentle movements that will help?

Great, cheers for the reassurance.
I think the biggest challenge will be learning to fuel. I've got a pretty slow metabolism and often do 3 hour rides before breakfast. I find it harder with running to eat but don't have a problem doing 90 minutes on an empty stomach. I think I'll just have to practise with some gels or just an energy mix.

I've just turned 30 so it's time for a marathon! Have been toying with the idea a while but had been more on the bike than running until now. But this last year I've been running much more and now days are shorter will do very little cycling. I used to do county cross country at school and feel half decent, stamina is alright at least.
There's one at the end of March and I'm keen to get as close to 3 hours (maybe below?) so am working with that in mind. Currently running 60–70km/week and prioritising an interval session in the week and a long run in the weekend. Possibly a tempo run of around 5k during the week but otherwise keeping it easy.
How long should I take to do a marathon specific programme? I was thinking to try to get a bit more speed now as there are a couple of 10k races in December that I could target. Then switch the focus to marathon with a good three months to prepare for that.
Does this seem an ok strategy? I don't think the marathon training will be drastically different from the speed focus I plan this next month and a bit. Probably just that intervals will get a bit longer and do more time at lower HR than now.

Thanks for this, very helpful. I'm thinking that the 15" Air would be ideal, but these are above €1,000 for M1 and M2 versions. Ideally I wouldn't go much higher than €1k, not sure if there are any configurations/versions to look for?
As I say, all these will be plenty powerful for my needs, though I'm swayed by the longevity argument if Apple silicon will likely outlast the Intel versions.

Thanks all for the pointers. I've been looking into it and upgrade to Big Sur seems the best (cheapest) option. I'll sacrifice Word but Libreoffice sounds like a good fix for that. Hopefully that will keep this in good health for a year or two longer, though I might still look into getting another machine in the new year. It would be peace of mind if this plays up, which would be a real pain for work.
I think I will go for the 15" option as I move a bit so would prefer to have the screen size wherever I go (though I'm saving my back with a stack of old magazines so I can work standing!). Seems that around €900 will be the budget for a 2019 MBP with 32 gb RAM and 512 gb SSD. I'm not that keen on the touchbar but that seems a given and it's not really a dealbreaker.
@c.h.e What was the EU retailer? I'm in Belgium so that could work for me. If I'm not in a rush I might also see if there are some better deals coming through at the end of the year.

New Mac advice por favor
I've just celebrated my third decade and realise that my trust Mac has also now been with me 10 years. I specced it out when I was in music college and needed something relatively powerful for production. This has lasted really well. See below for the overview.
These days writing is my trade, of which the majority is on browser-based CMS rather than programs. The most demanding is if I've got several tabs and for some reason Apple Photos can cause it to crash occasionally, especially if I'm doing some minor edits.
But basically I use Chrome, iTunes, Slack, and Photos. No streaming (other than a couple of Youtube vids at lunch), no gaming. I haven't updated the OS for several years as I've got an old Word 2011 licence that I use and didn't feel like subscribing every year. And until now I've been able to get away with the old OS.
But I've now realised that Slack isn't going to play along any more which is essential for work. It comes as I've been thinking to get something newer for a while. I'm used to a 15" screen so would like this, but it could otherwise be a relatively lower spec. I'd also like to get a refurb but from an official site, so that I can put it on expenses.
Does anyone have recommendations? I'd rather keep costs down and don't think I'd need bells and whistles and all the other Apple gimmicks (like the touchbar), though I know that these are often unavoidable.

What's the take on nasal breathing? I've been doing it to stop me going into higher HR zones though wonder if I'm adapting to it and undermining its use as a yardstick for effort. On a progressive run I can quite comfortably run at 4:20/km just nasal breathing, perhaps a bit above what would be "easy" pace. My tempo is 3:50ish/km.
Alternatively, it might be a good training technique and I'm enjoying the benefits. Or perhaps I might just be endowed with a sizeable schnoz... -
My collection has been growing since I last shared but this is the most recent. I've got two others also designed by my friend but this is the first that she has applied herself as she's new to tattooing. Whereas the others were illustrations that I have from her, this was a more open brief: "Like a stack of bones" was as precise as I got. Anyway, she nailed it and I'm chuffed.

Nice one, thanks for the info. I actually just pulled the trigger on some Takumi Sen 8s that I got for 100€ brand new on Vinted. They look a bit different to anything else I've tried so should be fun for the novelty alone. And seems we think they'll last a bit longer (which won't necessarily stop me buying trainers to outlast my running years).

Cheers @duncs and @Well_is_it, I should have specified that I have the fortune of not working Mondays, hence why I do a long ride that day. I agree that I could probably ditch a z2 run during the week and add in some speed work. That's what is missing from the picture right now and while the bike is pure endurance, I would like to improve my top end running. I'll give the Tuesday recommendation by duncs a go. Cheers!

Agreed on the gap between cycling and running being key. I'll probably have accumulated a load of TSS in Marseille, for which I'll be aiming for probably three 100k + rides and a couple of shorter ones. Probably will be doing my best to hit that hard as it's the year's main cycling holiday. But I just looked at Strava from last year and this time I'll be heading out with a much better level, so that's reassuring.
And yes also to the 4 days/week running; I do most of it first thing in the morning so starts easy then sometimes do a couple of clicks at "race pace" once I'm properly awake. The one thing I'm thinking is to try to make sure I get a longer run in during the week as this has been knocked out by a couple of dry days where I actually did a ride rather than the long run.
My week roughly looks like this:
Monday - long ride
Tuesday - easy run
Wednesday - longer run/fast run (time depending)
Thursday - easy run
Friday - longer run
Saturday - long ride
Sunday - maybe a short run -
@salad No worries at all, it's an obvious point! But yeh, the old man is very frustrated and starts harping on about "bring back the good ole days" etc. He said maybe I'd be better selling it for the cash, at which point I suggested we drop this and wait until he's back in the UK (rather than tell him it's effectively an expensive paperweight haha).
Heartfelt thanks to all, it's actually quite simple: if he can't find the pword anywhere I'll tell him to reset his Apple ID and pass on the deets. Failing that we'll try the proof of purchase route.
