An old thread, I reckon... and you may have already found what the problem was. Notwithstanding that, your problem is that your BB has the 51.3mm centre sleeve designed for 68/73mm BB shells, which means that in a 73mm shell, the retaining rings (cups) go flush with the edges of the BB shell, but in a 68mm shell, a portion of the cups protrude, by design.
If you want your cups go flush with the edges of the (68mm) shell, you need to replace the centre sleeve with a narrow, 46.3mm one, you can in email-order it from Phil , for about 15 quid.
Phil BB-s with 105mm spindles or shorter come with the narrow centre sleeve, by default.

Could anyone please, give me some hints on from where to source replacement axle for a Lambert (Viscount) rear hub with cartridge bearings? (Later I can give axle dimensions, too if needed.)
Any info on compatible hubs would be of interest, as well!I also had the idea of having the axle re-manufactured by the local turner from titanium, if I had the idea of the exact material grade and I knew a source from where the raw titanium rod could be acquired.

Chance is that this bike is not a 1951 make.
Do you have a corresponding frame No.?
