I'm visiting a friend in Japan and he wants me to take his bike over, whats a good approach for single use/ one way bike transport?
I wont have much personal luggage so believe i can (Link to airline baggage policy take bike as part of checked baggage. any suggestions? (having never done this any advice would be appriciated) -

just because you would only use a fixed for riding across town doesn't mean everyone does. I ride 100+ miles at a time on fixed, I can be stranded in middle of nowhere doing either. I know how to maintain a bike and check for wear and so would start to carry spare chain hundreds of miles before the old one broke. The sprocket being rohloff only is far more likely to be irreplaceable than a 1/8 chain which isn't overly uncommon.

@mrgumby & @30miles Thanks this is the info i was looking for, not what I wanted to hear mind but you have answered the question.
@M_V How is that any different to when i ride fixed except ill have a lot less load on the chain. Also I always have 2 spare links in saddle bag.
Was wanting to put 1/8 on as i have lots of 1/8 parts already so i could swap and choose ratios.
