Given it's a MTB frame, I'd be concerned about whether generic fixie cranks would clear the chainstays.
If you choose MTB cranks, you should get a chainline that allows you to use a proper 135mm singlespeed hub in the future.
Hmm...the friends using them, have them on old MTB frames.
You think MTB cranks are a much better option? They seem to be pretty expensive...although I am sorely tempted by those Zee ones...

Do you have a screw on freewheel or a cassette and freehub?
Cassette and freehub...from what I understand I can use a surly cog that I've been given, and a spacer kit/lockring?
Cheers for the advice!
I've had these: http://www.charliethebikemonger.com/driveline-track-cranks--free-bb-264-p.asp recommended to me by a couple of friends, any thoughts?

Evening all,
After some stop-start plans to turn my old 1995 Marin Bear Valley into a SS, I've decided that it needs sorting as I move into London and will be commuting on it within then next month or so.
Essentially the drivetrain was FUBAR, so I thought SS was the way forward...after some investigation the cranks mount the outer ring to the middle ring, which mounts to the granny ring...and as far as I understand it, that makes them useless for SS conversion (help?!).
So...after some advice really...what's the best way forward please?
Budget of about £150 to get it all back up and running...help me please, I'm useless.

Hey Jeez,
I think we see lots of businesses that start off using spreadsheets for all their data, then get to the point where the data needs to be shared, distributed or reported on...and hit a wall.
It's a case of drag and drop to get an XLS or CSV file into our software, then within about 30 minutes you can have a decent looking sharable database that can be deployed to web or iOS.
I've come into this really late in the day, but the plan is to get some people up and running on a database within 30 minutes, using their existing business data.
It's a PR event for us, but for a small business it could be a useful start in the data management/efficient working and sharing areas...and you get something for free.
Given the location that's being used, I thought a few people that frequent LMNH might be up for this...maybe?

On 28/01/2014 the company I work for is taking over a bit of space at Look Mum No Hands for a thing called #Escfromxls.
We're looking for some small businesses with their business stuck in a spreadsheet, that want to get it out, making it easy to share with others, and ultimately maybe use our product.
If you're in the old street area on the 28th, fancy a freebie database and can sit with us for 1/2 an hour and let us build you something...then please reply on this tread or pm me.
If this isn't cool, mods please delete!
Cheers
Chris

Your surfboard (many ^^^ with the 7m long Podracer) matches my quilt cover. That is all, you can keep your stupid cup, my feisty vole says the terminal velocity required to 'wall of death' within it is "Beyond comprehension, what the fuck are you thinking? I'm calling the RSPCA and Childline"
What the hell am I going to do with these bike sized wall of death safety helmets now?

I'm 120KG and carry about 10KG in stuff on my daily commute - 600km's in the first 6 months of ownership, and it's just had a check over... all if good.
I think they're playing it safe (to echo other comments), but also if you are on the heavier end of the spectrum, the bushes on the rear triangle, and the suspension bush will wear at a faster rate.
