Another alternative is a 130bcd road chainset. Plenty available on eBay, cheap as chips. I'm gonna be using a Shimano Exage 500 chainset on a 107mm BB. Gives a 43mm chainline.

Needless to say the spacers on the back need to go in favour of single speed chainring bolts but once that's sorted, there'll be pleanty of room.

i don't think the stronglight chainset is a problem per se. i think that the QC of the chainset is a bit random and some may have bad tapering resulting in being too close to the stay.

if you are going to attempt to make a 3 grand bike don't just stuff it with cash. i.e. hang expensive bits off a cheapo frame. for 3 grand i'd want something like a custom fit 953. fuck silly carbon wheels, totally impractical and look ridiculous on a bike that is basically a a retro machine

And something else: why are the ladies versions that are called 'S' and are shorter more suitable for 'ladies'? What is the advantage for women in a shorter saddle?

Women's versions traditionally were shorter to accommodate the wearing of a dress. Don't worry about length - width is more important.
