I have a GT Vertigo BMX which hasn't seen any love since 99. Most of the components are done for but the frame is in good nick and would come up well after a good old scrub.

Had this bike since I was 14 so it's getting on for it's 13th birthday.

Have now got a Leader 735 frame

For the price of that frame you can buy a good quality second hand bike on here that will meet/surpass your needs.

Also why not try ride fixed from the get go? Why only freewheel for commuting/long rides?

I could but I've gone through so many second hand bikes - so this time my plan is to fix myself up a fresh bike and in the process learn how all these parts fit/work together to be a little more self-reliant in the future.

I prefer freewheel riding on dangerous routes into work but yeah, I'd likely ride fixed on +10mile rides anyway. A little backwards I admit, but just preference I guess.

Lol, the fk, freewheel for 50 pounds? Shimano one will cost u 10..

Agreed, £1400 is way over my budget - but my plan was always to find used/unwanted parts for this project. I'm more concerned with the quality/compatibility of the parts listed at this point.

My plan for a while has been to build a bike from scratch but as I'm a total novice I thought before I commit to purchasing these parts I'd post them here and see if anyone had any suggestions/opinions on this setup.

I'm planning to keep it freewheel with a flip/flop hub incase I end up on the track but this'll mainly be used for commuting and the odd long distant ride.
