Disclaimer: My road fix also serves as primary commuter. It sees a rack and panniers most days. Otherwise, it fits here because it has drop bars and a brake. It also has mudguards, so winter bike category also fits. I ride it to, then on, trails which would put it in the off-road fix category.

The micro-categorization seems silly to an extent, but is useful when looking for inspiration or images of a very particular niche. In the case of this particular thread, I count any fix that is ridden primarily on road and has been assembled by its rider to be fit for that purpose in their ideal to be acceptable. That includes alt bars and flat bars with bar ends, etc.

The bike above, with the funky bars fits. It would be very comfortable for long road miles. My road fix alternates mostly between drop bars and Jones bars which I sometimes find even more comfortable for long road miles than drops.

By my tastes, the alu tubes (aside from the last one which looks steel) are "fat". I think they look good. No idea how they ride. To each their own.

Having recently purchased and put some miles on dia compe bar ends with the same ratchet guts as the Uno, I agree. They feel really nice.

Rival 1 and Apex 1 are quite good. I have a good amount of experience with these. Feels sram-y.

When I put my Carradice on a rack-as-support, I use the strap that normally goes round the seatpost to tie it to the rack. Seems to work well enough and keeps it from sliding/bouncing too much. But...it's still a bag on the back of the bike so a fair amount of bouncing will happen to whatever's in there if riding over rough ground/trail.

Looks really nice. Makes me want to reassemble a road fixed bike.

Yeah, I've wondered about how functional those guards actually are. He lives in a rainy, or at least wet place and doesn't drive if I remember correctly. He made the guards himself, but I would assume more coverage would needed to really do much good.

I have this Tubus Disco. Mine is mounted to eyelets, but it can be mounted via QR. It's very solid.

What do the dropouts look like? Is the surface flat enough for the qr to squeeze the rack against, or are they "hooded" as with Breezer or Ritchey?

Agreed. I also always like the look of the narrow gauge tubes he uses for seat stays.

I think the convergence of purely utilitarian use/intent with the relatively aggressive position that makes it work for me. If it were more upright with swept bars, it would still be cool. But, not as cool.

I love how over the top English's igh/commuter/winter bikes are. His personal commuter is pretty rad and has seen big miles and a two gear hubs. Hopefully they're all used as much as his.

The rack top reminds me of the mud/snow guards I made years ago from a big plastic bin for the Pugsley. They lasted a few years before I removed them. One under the downtube and one started by the BB and bent up under the rack. Worked nicely to keep crud off the drivetrain and my legs. .

Pclips really do work well and they make pulling wheels easier than the QR mounted adapters. Had a bike for a time that has no mounts on the fork. Pclips stayed put with no rattling or wear through several seasons of commuting.

My Bike Friday became more functional with the rack/basket addition. Zip ties for the basket and the rack "folds" enough that I should still be able to get it into the suit case with the bike for travel. Basket is smallish and would have to go in a carry on or checked bag to the destination.

That makes much more sense, and those cranks would make ideal candidates for that with their profile. Thanks

The crank on the orange bike is an interesting choice. They went all out on every piece of the frameset and selected nice components everywhere else, then installed a perfectly functional, but very cheap crank. I like it in a way, but seems a bit out of place.

Yeah, I also want the "wiggle room" and tolerance to being slightly out of adjustment of 8 or 9sp since this bike will be in and out of the case and traveling around.

Interesting about 11 feeling too close. Hadn't considered that might be an issue with smaller wheels.
