Chaps - I need some help.
My existing roadbike (Specialized Allez) has finally died (crack in head tube) after years of service.
I therefore need to buy a new road bike. This will be my mile crunching bike, primarily for training, as I have a fixed gear for commuting and a tri bike for racing, so want something comfortable and fun to ride, without being soft.
My work offers bike to work, but we have to go through Halfords, therefore am limited to buying a Boardman (I am based in Ireland).
I am looking at the Boardman Carbon Pro http://www.halfords.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_11101_catalogId_15551_productId_992060_langId_-1_categoryId_212536
Now they get great reviews and all but I just don't find them particularly sexy or attractive. I would much rather get a Canyon, Dolan, or Ribble, but this would mean paying double the price for a similar spec. which I cannot rationally bring myself to do.
I therefore need some supportive encouragement and reassurance that these bikes are awesome and I will not regret going for the "cheap" option.
And before anyone feels the need to point it out - Yes - I fully realise how wankerish this thread is.
Chaps - just a quick update - I received my Boardman Pro Carbon this week. I have to say that I think it is awesome. Smoother than anything else I have ever ridden (however it is my first carbon frame) but stiff when you are putting the power down. The Halfords experience was actually surprisingly okay, however I did borrow my mates torque wrench to check all the settings. Cheers for all the comments and advice.

On a slightly different note - if anyone wants a wee memento of the Giro starting in Norn Iron (Northern Ireland for the English lads) then get yourself one of these:

I was wearing mine proudly on Saturday night. I had the slogan shouted at me a few times dans le pub (in the pub) after the race.

James I got a Dolan pre-cursa direct from Dolan about a year ago. It came with a headset, but you fit it yourself. The only thing I had to do was cut the forks to size. It is an integrated headset, so you do not need a headset press. I cut my forks myself with a good hacksaw blade. Piece of piss to do.

Hi guys
I just bought one of these:
Abus Granit-54 X-Plus: Amazon.co.uk: Sports & Outdoors
Unfortunately it came with a plastic mount for the lock attached to one of the ends. I don't want this as I am never going to mount this to my bike beacuse a) It is very heavy and b) it would look shit.
So, what I am wondering is, can I just hacksaw the bit of plastic off without damaging the lock? I don't think it serves any purpose for the lock?
Just wanted to check before I attack it.
Cheers

Sorry chaps, I know there a few of these on here at the moment, but I finally have started putting together my first build after about 18 months of research, mainly on here, and getting all the parts together. This is going to be a high speed commuter.
I currently have:
1 Dolan Pre Cursa Frame and Forks courtesy of Dolan
1 set of lovely V-sprint wheels courtesy of Varno (nice chap)
Miche Primato Cranks and 49 tooth chainring courtesy of Rick van Looy
Chain and Cog from Marxist Vulcan
Sugino crank bolts from velosolo – thanks to sirbikealot for steering me in the right direction for those
Vision Stem and Bars courtesy of Iron Mike
Some Dia Compe Front Brake courtesy of JP
A Charge saddle and bar tape courtesy of Wiggle
28mm Rubinos courtesy of Wiggle
I also got a cane creek cross top lever from Hamster but the damn thing doesn’t fit my bars because the idiots at Cane Creek call their levers 26mm but they actually don’t fit a 26mm bar. Retards.Bike was due to be operational yesterday when I got the brake lever but the damn thing doesn’t fit so now I am waiting for Planet X to deliver me some Tektro ones that actually are 26mm.
Anyway, I have everthing else assembled, and wrapped one side of the bars to see what the tape looked like.
Quite pleased so far. Weighs in at around 8.6kg, but admittedly this was on bathroom scales so not sure how accurate this is. Now thinking I need to get a proper leather saddle, but the spoon will have to do for now.
Picture attached. Can’t wait to get her lit up till fuck.

Someone please help. I bought a second hand set of Miche cranks off here and a new Miche BB form wiggle. I need some crank bolts to fit the cranks, but I can't for the life of me figure out what fecking bolts I need.
Been looking on Chain Reaction so wondering if these will work:

Any insight appreciated!

King - awesome to see this thread as I am just about to embark on my first build with the same frame, so interested to see how yours develops. I have a couple of questions for the forum - do you know if the pre-cursa frame will take 170mm cranks, and what is the thickest tyre you can run on them - will they take a 25 / 28 mm tyre?

Varno - what is the difference in the Mach 1 rim and the DP18? I want a set of reasonably light but strong rims for a new lightweight build mainly for commuting/training that I can ride the shit out of. Is there much weight / strength difference between the 2? The Mach 1's are only machined, correct? I only need the front machined.....
And i am embracing being one of those c#nts on a Halfords bike.
