Monday morning (2nd Sept) I cycled to work in the anticipation of taking part in the LCC Space for Cycling protest ride later that day. It was the first time cycling the 20 mile route since moving house. I used to cycle 10 miles each way so was comfortable with the distance.
Around 7 miles in at approx 7.30am going at 18mph, on the A21 Bromley Road close to the Catford Junction, I was hit by a van pulling out of Canadian Avenue. He was crossing my lane to go southbound on the A21. There were no cars around, but 2 cyclists a few metres ahead of me, so I thought he saw me. In that few metres gap, he pulled out, I had no time to react and the front of the van hit the side of the bike, sending me flying and rolling onto the tarmac. He was extremely apologetic but I was too in shock to respond.
Amazingly I only have bruises from the bike hitting me and grazes from the fall, no sight of blood. Policeman on a motorbike was close by and took details of driver and a witness. Ambulance took me to A&E to get checked over and xray on right ankle which was clear. There is bruising above and below the ankle. Other than a few other minor bruises, I feel fine.
The bike?
- Front wheel is not running true, back wheel (not even 2 weeks old) running true but not in line with the bike.
- Left crank arm bent inwards it cant rotate fully as it hits the chain stay. This is what the van hit.
- Top tube is cracked
- Seat is moved out of line and ripped at the edge.
- Crack in helmet
I now slightly dread the admin work with claiming on his insurance. Just what I needed a few days before my birthday.

Hey beenbrun! Elaine here from that LBK Mersea Island ride!
I've been to a few private residences in previous years around North London (Hampstead / Angel area). Will need to have a dig to remember the names/locations.
Last year I thought a change and see larger commercial buildings.
Angel Building
- large terrace on roof.
- sculpture in central atrium

Lloyd's of London
- the escalators
- the big open trading floor

Think I'm back to residential this year...

Thanks Jogger and NorthLondonLight for your offers, before I commit to anything, I have a slight issue with the removal of my current stem (see photo below). Sorry for not paying much attention, I only realised the stripped allen bolt when trying to remove the stem today.
Any bright ideas? Is it possible?
If it comes off, where can I get replacement bolts from? online / bike shop / hardware shop?

Totally doable and it'll only get easier with time. I'm not familiar with the terrain but what goes up must come down!!
I used to do 9.5miles each way from Canada Water to Shepherds Bush. Now I've moved to Petts Wood (BR5) and want to get back on my bike - considering cycling 15 miles to Clapham Junction then overground the rest of the way. Or maybe once I'm on my bike, I'd be tempted to just ride the whole way. .. -

I assume as that was a week ago^ this is resolved. I have everything but freewheel tool remover. PM me if the rest still needed
Hi, it hasn't resolved quite yet, just progressed :)
I got myself a freewheel remover but have had no luck so far in loosening the freewheel. Its pretty stiff. Does anyone have any ideas? Planning to take it to a bike shop where they have a vice and more muscle than me.

Hi, I'm looking to get a new rear wheel for my single speed and would like to know if anyone could lend me tools to do so.
I believe, from a bit of research, I need:
a freewheel tool remover
an adjustable wrench
a chain whip
and some grease (this I could purchase as its not technically borrowing!)I'm in BR 5, work in W 12 and can be around central London. Any advice is appreciated.
My old wheel still has potential (it did survive London to Paris) , a spoke needs replacing and the bearings a clean and check which I plan to learn and do a bit later. In the meantime, I just want to be cycling again and make the most of the gorgeous conditions.
good point there.
good luck with the sale!
