Switzerland: Anyone been?
Doing a 5 day tour to visit friends from Zurich to Bern and back (3 days cycling), with a stopover probably in Lucerne on the way back. There are lots of national cycling routes to jump on but my experience of following routes like these in Germany is constant stop/start making sure I haven't gone past any of those tiny signs saying where to go.
Does anyone have experience of cycling routes in Switzerland? is it worth using them or should I just follow the roads?
any other tips for the region would be greatly appreciated!

pictures of what exactly? not much to show. the hub OLD had to be decreased to fit into the 120mm spacing. as for performance I love it - the ability to shift when stationary; shifting easily under load when ascending; wide enough ratio for all applications; no need to service anything, including the chain which stays remarkably clean once you remove the derailleur . the only downside is obviously the weight, but i've begrudingly come to terms with that

There is talk of needing to 'break in' new internal hubs. I know my nexus 8 speed started to shift better after a couple of hundred kms. Other than that I think the most likely fault would be somewhere in the shifter cable. This would explain the yellow marks lining up in 4th gear but slipping with others. Maybe check for compression occurring somewhere in the housing?

I like the bb routing, nice... I'd go straight for 42t ring, that will put your middle gear at 70gi which is usually the of the peg gear ratio for a reason :)
that seems like quite an extreme jump, keeping in mind I will be using this for loaded touring. I take your point though, maybe i'll meet you half way and go for 39t ;-) With fewer gears it does become a bit of a guessing game to get the right balance

i thought i would have to fix the noodle in place somehow but the tension from the gear cable means that it doesn't move at all, even in the slackest gear.
^^^^^^^ there's not much I could find online about resizing internal hubs, but my understanding is you can only do it effectively with roller brake hubs, like this, not disc, which i'm guessing your alfine would be. taking off the roller brake (or removing the bolt that sits in its place) takes away a big deal, bringing it does to around 126mm. From there you only have to swap the non-drive-side lock nut for one of the thinner ones that are standard on shimano rear hubs. This makes it 122-3mm which easily fits without cold setting. Of course the dish and chain-line gets messed up with all this but i've compensated with an extra short bb.
Kevin you're right about the ratios. at the moment i've got 32/16 which makes the lowest gear at 28.5gi completely useless. I want to change to a 36t ring up front which would give me a top gear of 98.1. At the moment i'm riding on the flat in 6th and 7th, so it would be good to bring this further into the middle.

32c paselas.^^
correct, this (or I) won't be going anywhere near a track. I'm well aware of the geometry, in fact I got this frame because I was sick of my road bike's general ineptitude at cobbles/pot holes and dirt tracks.A single speed rear would be to make it a bit nippier - the rear wheel alone weighs 2.5kg undressed. that said I was surprised that the whole bike weighed in at exactly 11 kilo, and it certainly still feels sprightly enough.

please excuse the shit cellphone pics and any other indiscretions i make.
my newly built pompino. looks much like any other except with a twist: its got a modified 8 spd Nexus hub and (extortionately priced) j-tek shifter. why go to the hassle of putting gears on a track-spaced bike? curiosity with internal hubs started it, then I got all lusty over the sscx pomps i was seeing everywhere.
all the geared pomps i've seen have zip ties coming out of everywhere, so the challenge was to keep this looking as if it was single speed. I ended up using a v-brake noodle thing running under the bb, which works great.
The idea is for this to be my commuter as well as tourer, and down the track I plan to build a matching fixed/single speed rear to swap out when it takes my fancy.
i'll be getting guards and a rack for it soon, if you care to make any suggestions.
btw the silver rim/black spokes/gumwall idea is shamelessly ripped off the gunmetal grey pomp that gets posted every couple of pages here.
Hi, I'm very interested in the whole lot. Would you post to Germany at my expense? dibs if so!
