Hi all, wanted to give a heads up for a really good business opportunity in my little town.
https://www.gth.net/property/rps_gth-wel210019s/bs26/axbridge/the-square/house/4-bedrooms
The tea shop is up for sale in Axbridge - we're next door to Cheddar, 30 mins from Bristol, at the foot of the Mendips. Loads of active tourism round here even in Covid times, and I reckon the tea shop would be an absolute goldmine if pivoted a bit. It's been run profitably by the current owner for several years, even though she doesn't open for breakfast or any later than mid afternoon. It's always rammed with locals, but could definitely cater to the innumerable cyclists who pass through on their way to the gorge etc as well.
It previous years it's housed a restaurant, apparently, which did well until the owner retired. There's no decent bakery round here, so that's another possibility. I reckon if you had a shelf of craft beers you could make a killing too. I'm just putting out my wish-list here, obvs.
The town itself is amazing - small but incredibly sociable, very left-leaning, and full of young parents due to the really good primary school. There's a decent pub, and another sort of pub / sort of restaurant. The other pub recently closed, sadly. My and my wife run the local community cinema, which is currently applying for a full alcohol licence, so that's another fun thing that happens when we're not covid'd up. Other than that, you're at the foot of the Mendips, with all the outside greatness that entails. Good for road riding, great for off-road. Trails at the Quantocks, Forest of Dean, Afan, Bike Park wales, Cwmcarn, etc etc all within easy striking distance.
I can honestly say that moving here is the best thing I've done, and I want more good people to move here and make it even better. -

As far as I understand it, the Randian philosophy is believing in the rights of the self above all else - to the extent that the world exists only for the self, and can be thought of in the sense that it doesn't exist for anyone but the self. Hence - climate change, resource depletion, the rights of others don't matter unless they directly impact you.
It's a delightful concept and is incredibly appealing to whiny white incels, it would seem. -
Sorry, I have only just seen this one sir.
Yeah, it is a bit pointless really. I tend to RT the articles I've read, so if I need to read them again I know where they'll be.
don't see how RT mainly from a Black American Economist (Thomas Sowell), a Somalian Ex-Muslim (Ayaan Hirsi Ali), another Black American Economist (Larry Elder) and an Imam (The Imam of Peace, Imam Twahidi) are Alt-Right though.
Care to explain? Neil says you're a good bloke 'in real life', so I look forward to your response.
In regards to the other part of your post regarding Socialism, I cannot disagree with you BUT - you're picking out all the good parts!
Usually what happens in Socialist states is, you get the ruler and ruled. It destroys the mobilised middle-class. The evidence is there for all to see.
I can list all the countries that have been tore apart by trying to implement socialism if you want?
That's nice of Neil to say. Neil's a lovely bloke too.
Your twitter feed has a bunch of seemingly intelligent but mostly GCSE-level socio/economic statements picked out to back up your political position. It's not unusual, I'm sure when I was active on twitter I did a fair bit of the same that marked me out as the centre-left individual I am.
I kinda feel you're doing exactly the same with your right-wing/libertarianism. You're picking out the bits you like - the ability to work hard and earn money, which lets you look after yourself - whilst ignoring the problems that the high water mark of capitalism is bringing (income inequality, resource diminishment, pollution, climate change, property prices, zero hours contracts, biggest rewards for some of the most useless in society whilst the most useful struggle to make ends meet, etc etc).
You also seem to be ignoring the Scandinavian models as to how socialist-leaning states can function incredibly well for a happy population.
I can list a country currently tearing itself apart over a far right-wing agenda, if you like? -

Your twitter account's a bit weird, Thom. Very few people followed, very few followers, but a near-endless stream of anti-left, anti-islam strangeness. Are you just screaming into the void? Is it just a release valve?
It reads exactly like every twitter stream from alt-right nerds-who-read-a-lot-of-internet I've ever seen, by the way, so well done on your independent thought. You wear your libertarianism proudly on your sleeve - well done for that. I mean, what has socialism ever done for us? Apart from the NHS, obviously. And the welfare state stopping people from living in abject poverty, of course. And paid leave, and holidays, and maternity leave, and workers' rights, and safety in the workplace, and pensions and oh fuck me, is it really so hard?
To ask another question - do you believe unchecked capitalism is both beneficial and sustainable in the long term? -
Has anyone used a CNC workshop in London recently? I'm just looking to get quotes on a few jobs coming up.
I'm previously used Alworth James and Bond and was fully happy with their work, but it can't hurt to have a look around to check their prices against others.
Had a conversation with Cutandconstruct.com but they only accept .dwgs of .dxfs, which is no good for my workflow at all. -

Got a heating question on behalf of my sister. Her house doesn't have gas, only electric. She needs new heating in her house and is torn between underfloor heating and electric wall heaters.
Her floor isn't solid, so presumably that rules out tiles. Can underfloor heating work effectively with engineered wood?
Are there any good electric wall heaters in existence? In my experience they're all pretty inefficient and ugly.
Any and all advice would be valued; she needs to make a decision sharpish because a new kitchen's going in and her husband is driving her mad with indecisiveness. -
Vulpine failed because they overestimated their market whilst getting their ordering massively wrong.
They had £250k in stock, according to the administrators. I'm not sure if that included the 2000 unsold and contractually unsellable Hoy Vulpine t-shorts...
Apparently they were trying to get £50k for the company. That's pretty much chump change - if you've got the infrastructure already, you can probably make that back from existing the stock. Anything else on top of that is a bonus. -

The rapha comparison is daft. Rapha started with an incredibly strong core - good brand and a few good products, from the off. What was it, classic bibs and merino jerseys, if memory serves? Built steadily from there.
Vulpine started with a huge song and dance - very social media-based, very Nick Hussey-based. That's a huge risk because as we all know, people can get very tiring on the socials. If your products aren't strong enough to back up your promises, that's even worse. Did Vulpine ever have a good core product, shrinking socks aside? Everyone I've ever spoken to, even if they liked the look of it, complained the jackets did not work as promised.
Move somewhere where there's good off-road riding and it'll be problem solved! Unless you move somewhere it's incredibly muddy from october until april. Whoops.
