Hi all
I have this Brompton sized (16x 1 3/8) wheel built with a sun rim and Sturmey kickshift hub. Built for an abandoned project about a year ago. A few scratches on the rim, but runs true and braking surface fine. Hub works exactly as it should, Tyre a bit worn with a few surface cuts.£50 posted

Evenin' all.
I've got this spare Flite in fair condition, a few marks and wear showing at the back edges and some rippling of the leather around the nose. The leather is not broken anywhere and all in all an excellent example. Dated 93 i bought it recently for one of my bikes but it just doesnt feel right on my MTB.£30 posted, PP gift (or add fees)

I've this all city fork i had on my crosscheck for 2 rides before reverting back to my old curved fork. I just didnt think this suited the bike. As such it has marks from installation on the crown where the race sits and on the steerer, but otherwise tip top. Pretty long steerer (see pics), 1 1/8th threadless, and more info on all citys site:

I've had this about a month, but its just too big for me. (60cm)
I got given the bike in its original form and i've converted it to Fixed. Its got new wheels (admittedly nothing special) cog, lockring, saddle, Bottom bracket, chainring and chain.
Frame is sound, but paint missing here and there. So its a bit ratty but no serious rust.
It has dropouts to allow the wheel to be pulled back but not a great deal so ideally needs a half link chain to get it perfect. Ive been riding it a bit slack and its been fine.
Rear wheel axle was respaced by about 5mm to get a decent chainline and the wheel re dished.
Its cost me £150 to get it like this so thats what i'm asking posted. £130 if you collect.

Before 1937 no variable gears were allowed in the TdF. This was because Henri Desgrange, the founder of the tour, disapproved of them: he wanted a 'man against man' contest, unconfused by technology. I'm not sure why he singled out derailleurs as the technology to be resisted when there were other techniques being used to enhance perfomances, but that's how it was.
By the mid thirties it was the practice to use a double sided rear hub with a double freewheel on either side. In 1903 Maurice Garin used a single fixed with no brakes. I'd have to look it up to be certain, but I think his gear was 84".
Desgrange fell ill during the 1936 event, and with him off the scene the modernisers introduced gears for 1937. This did bring a modest increase in average speed, but less,I believe, than EPO.
It should also be remembered that before the 1950's many of the mountain roads were not made up (this can be seen in the 1927 picture) and the loose surface tends to cause wheelspin when riding out of the saddle.
Absolutely brilliant, thanks mate. So if no gears were allowed before 37', does that mean some guys were fixed and some had a freewheel? Or am I right in thinking the freewheel/free hub mechanism only came with the invention of gears?
