I've got a 07 kona Cowan, it's a beaut!!!
1x9, marzochi dj 2's, seat goes almost high enough to ride properly, certainly could with a 400mm seat post but low enough to not get caught up when jumping (I'm 5'8"). Paragon dropouts. Extras are now 2.5 & 2.35 maxxis high rollers, 9 & 8" discs, sintered pads, 23-12 cassette, 105 mech, slx crank and profile racing pedals.
It's a beat for anything hardcore, selling my free ride bike as I just use this or my mtb!

Here's my proposed cx build (provided I'd still be able to race with risers??)
Planet x kaffenback frame and fork - £180
Random headset - £15
Thomson stem - once right length has been choose - 2nd hand
On one risers - £13
Bb7 discs and avid levers - 2nd hand
Xt shifter and 105 mech - 9 speed - 2nd hand
12-25 cassette - £15j
Road crank with single 39t ring - fsa/campag - 2nd hand
SRAM 971 chain - £20
Tyres to be decided - probs maxxis
Wheels no idea - 2nd hand
Lizard skin lock on grips - £20
Got some dmr v8 pedals I'll use
Is a dropper post a good idea for jumping? I notice nobody uses them but not sure why, seems a reasonable idea to me.....Last thing, do you have to run over the barriers or can you hop them? Can't find any proper cx rules :/ maybe I'm just a retard

This is going to be what my next bike is without a doubt, with the possibility of being geared in the future.
For now, talk more to me about this using a 27" bike with 700c, I have one of those. But it's a 18-23 tubing Raleigh, will it be strong enough? I'll probably use flat bars and ss not fg. Not be for cycle cross as such, just a light weight trail bike for when the rigid mtb is too much

^ that exactly there is why I love riding without the proper kit, fixie's, rigid mtbs etc, overtaking folk on my alu/carbon road bike just isn't the same as fixed with a rack on the front! Similarly me and a mate were riding a local off road park, he was on a downhill bike, me on a old skool rigid, we both over took a carbon 100mm bike with Lycra and sun glasses wearing bloke with rucksacks on. He eventually caught up with us after we'd put the bikes away and were half way down a fag, didn't look impressed haha.

So I'm putting gears back onto one of my bikes, its running a Shimano lx 9 speed shifter and because of the small cassette I want a short cage rear mech, will a Shimano 105 10 speed work? Either 5600 or 5700?
Got the 5600 on my gt so would probably put that onto this bike and the new 5700 onto my gt with 5600 shifters.
Will that work? I've read something about Shimano 10 speed mtb and road parts not working together?

Pretty much what I did on my first build except in stages, great fun to learn on and these old bikes don't seem to have too many things seized - 2009 bianchi - stuck post, steel post in a late 70's puch - not stuck at all!
Have my Raleigh in a very similar set up, fantastic ride and sooooooo comfy - more so than my 2010 GT :D

Got a gt same as this - http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/gt-gtr-series-2-road-bike-id54660.html
Thinking of doing a harlequin on it, would use cinelli grey, black, yellow or blue to do it
Grey and blue? Black and blue? Blue and yellow? Black and yellow? Grey and yellow? Black, grey and blue?
Tapes this one - http://www.dalescycles.com/cinelli-macro-bar-tape-p380
Just being silly? Just use black fizik/lizardskin?

Jadias - my personal thinking on hhsb. As a big generalisation is (with obvious rules aside)
Brakeless.
Big seat to bar drop if using drops or using bars that won't make the bike as quick as possible, ie risers, or bull horns but no areo extensions.
Stickers in hipster fashion, clothing, or bike related
Silly fast wheels that don't match, with the quicker one in the front
Pedals with straps/toeclips
All on a track frame that's seen some useYour bike looks rideable over long distance, and is just to clean to be a hhsb
