not sure where the blame lies here
the sidewalk. sounds like the guy got a solid punch to the face that knocked him over. not killed him. when he fell, he hit his head. just as the cyclist would likely have had happen had he ran into that car door that opened in his path.
the guy should have checked before opening his car door.
the cyclist shouldnt have punched the guy.
the sidewalk shouldnt have killed the man.
lots of things that should and shouldnt have happened in that situation. but very regrettable non the less.

only one that comes to mind was riding my brakeless kabuki submariner FG across campus. coming up to a busy intersection with a red light i went to stop. Pedals started turning backwards but the bike kept bombing forward at full steam. managed to unclip, jump off the bike sideways and run off to the side of the road with it. I consider it lesson learned, i will never build a FG with no brakes, and a cottered crank again in my life. the chainring came loose from the crank arm, and would just free wheel around.

15 times as much?
where do you get your spray paint/powdercoat from?assuming my $10 USD for my paint job, and around $150 for a powdercoat job. didnt feel like looking up the actual conversion rate, but earlier in this thread someone quoted 100 GBP for powdercoating. Turns out its actually $163 USD, so over 16 times as much.
as to where i got my paint, it was cheap stuff, at a little hardware store called taylors do it center. roughly $3 and change per can, 1 can primer, 1 can color, 1 can clear. so about $10. For high quality paint, maybe $6 per can, still less than $20 for a paint job. Good lord stuff is expensive in England.

with proper prep i dont see why spray paint isnt an option for a non-restoration job. Most of my beater commuting bikes were bought for $20-$50, stripped to individual parts, new grease in all bearings, new tubes/tires/chain, prepped for paint, sprayed with a rattle can while hanging from a coat hook, allowed 24 hours to de-gas and cure, then clear coated, allowed 24 hours to cure, then reassembled and ridden hard and put away wet. never had any issues, and with proper prep work, and a little artistic ability, they all looked great. Maybe spent $10 USD on the paint jobs and they held up fine.
My two cents, paying 15 times as much, give or take, to powder coat a frameset, that i plan on having professionally painted later is a bit batty. but to each his/her own.

thank you much, great history on the company in that link, sadly i don't think my fathers bike is a 30's vintage. I will probably need to head out to the cabin and snap some pictures of it to post up to get more definitive feedback.

^^ This shows either too long of a thought process or the makings of an evil genius, I'm afraid to hang around and find out which one...
I ride through a couple of estates on the way back, now the suns out all the rudeboys are sat on the walls leering, I'm pretty much waiting for what happens next...
In one thread ive been called mcgyver, and told i have the makings of an evil genius.... i like it here :)

So, Ive got a pension for building old bikes, and have more projects than i should. But there is one that ive been looking to do for a while that i havent had enough information to tackle. For a christmas present I wanted to take my dads old bike and freshen it up.
I thought i had pictures to post, ill have to fix that, but its an Aberdale Featherweight. three speed rear hub. No idea what the year is, or anything about it really, and the internet has been surprisingly useless. It is an English bike, so I figured id ask here.
I guess the primary thing i want to know is if its a relatively nice bike that i should keep all original as possible, or if its a cheap undesireable bike that i dont have to feel bad about stripping down and repainting. Somehow i doubt replacement decals and the like would be easy to locate given the lack of info on the web. it would be nice to be proven wrong though.
thanks in advance.

^Thanks, McGyver.
So the thinking there is, if you can't shoot them dead for nicking your bike, simply taser the living shit out of their testicles with a purpose made, remote operated taser bike?
Overkill, no?
no worries, would not be the weirdest thing ive ever made.
Mmmmmm riding along, remote rubs against coins/keys/general crap in pocket = me tasering myself in the balls = loose control of bike and disappear under bus = epic fail
no one said it was fool proof ;) but at least think of the joy youll give all the bystanders on your way out. I suppose you could rig up some sort of jet ski style safety cord so when YOU come off the bike, the system is armed, but while youre on it the system is disarmed, even if you press the button on accident.

after having a similar conversation with a lady friend of mine about this subject, including the testiculars, her recomendation was nair.
this was after i told her i had a debt hanging over my head from a lost bet about getting my legs waxed, specifically a brazillian, and was worried about the ball area. she advised me to hit it with nair first, no hair to wax, no pain. its supposedly gentle enough for that tender area.

well lets see, as i understand it yall arent allowed to carry firearms over there. could be a fun project to design a saddle with taser electrodes in it, and some sort of remote control, alla those remote shock dog collars. position the electrodes at right around testicle level, let the guy take the bike, as he rides away, calmly push the button on the remote, smile and enjoy the carnage. kick him while he's down, get back on your bike, ride away.

Hey, come on the next Guinness Ride, you sound perfectly qualified.
that my good sir (assuming from the handle), would make me an expert at the submerged track stand on my way home. As a yank (i think yall call us that) from across the pond im afraid i wont be physically partaking in many rides or get togethers with other members.

my greatest personal argument reaped from personal experience against riding drunk, is the loss of my bikes. Somehow i always manage to make it home, but the bike winds up somewhere between where i started, and where i ended up. and i have yet to ever locate it afterwords. Lost a great little schwinn super le tour Ss that way, and also a absolutely wonderful kabuki submariner fixed gear that i built up.

Hello ladies and gents. Just joined up in an effort to make a little headway on my newest obsession, a Viking framed fixed gear. Much to my dismay those frames are as rare as hen's teeth across the pond here in the states. Waiting out my time in the nursery to prove im not a troll, spammer, petulant child, or other form of forum terrorist. as soon as im allowed to post up some bike porn ill throw up some pics of my past projects.
Cheers!
sending PM on viking frame, very very interested if hasnt sold yet.
