Caustic soda is only going to work if the stem is aluminium, and the steerer tube / forks are steel! Also never hit the stem up from inside the forks as the wedge makes it completely ineffective. If it's steel stem cutting it out might be your best option but its going to be a pain not having anything to grip on to.

Unfortunately too small for me at 55cm top tube and seat tube. I've head the seat clamp fixed and the front cantilever mounts adjusted as the where not on very straight, had the fork alignment checked at the same time which was fine. All done by Winston in Hither Green. I've not painted these areas properly as you can see in the photos, if I was keeping it I would just get some paint mixed and touch these areas up. Other than that the paint is good and there are no dents. Comes with Shimano headset (cleaned and greased recently, looked in perfected condition)
Bike is in SE London
I'm sometimes in London sometimes not so if your interested we will have to work out a good time to view.

Specialized hardrock finished. Group set is from a trek, I like it! Going to take it for a spin today. Think I'll try and get my partner to use this for touring when we get a chance. This was a freecycle from the forum shout out @T_Unit ! Also shout out @velosaurus who freecycled me a load of useful stuff. Including the pedals which tried to rebuild today but a special tool is needed to tighten them back up. I managed to improvise by dropping in a bearing to temporarily lock up the cone but it I have a feeling the will come loose.

Getting there. Replaced the bottom bracket as it had suffered from the usual corosion, unfortunately there is a little bit of play when the cranks are horizontal, not sure how much of a problem it is, it's very slight and generally running smooth. The sensible option would have been to use cartridge bearings but I wanted to keep the bike original.
