I went to the local corner shop earlier and they gave me a box of chocolates as a new year gift. Never experienced anything like that before, and it feels so weird for a usually transactional place.
I left with a huge smile on my face and love that that there’s a glimpse of humanity and community. All I’ve done is buy beer there and said hello/goodbye.

Yeah, looks like you’ll need to have all the switch gubbins either in a junction box in the cavity if you can access that, or you could maybe shove some wago-style connectors in there to replicate a standard ceiling rose set up.
This is what you’d need to replicate basically. Should be easy enough to do it yourself if there’s space/access!
(Edit: bad image, this one's better)

It has a junction box with just Live and Neutral terminals
Seems a bit weird, you’ll generally need a loop in section to wire the switch into the live, unless it’s expecting this to be done before it gets to the light?
You got a picture?
There generally isn’t an earth on the actual light cable (if it’s a plastic fixture), but the others in the ring/switch lines definitely need to be earthed

I have this handy rule of thumb: 98% of everything the humans do is a terrible idea.
I used to think something like this. My phrasing was “90% of everything is shit”, but when I realised it was one of those ‘laws’ (Sturgeon's law), after a few years, I realised it wasn’t a particularly good way to think about the world. Figuring out why things exist as they are, and therefore what specific changes could be made to alter those particularities is a more rewarding path. It’s led me to love a lot more than 10%, given the extra context, and at the same time has given weight to ideas that underpin better forms of social organisation, founded in trust and minor optimism rather than isolated cynicism.
(I’m not saying you’re not doing the same anyway, i’m just spitballing)
Not related to brain plastic, obvs, but this is the wtf thread so…

Torrenting really dropped off a cliff when Netflix launched their streaming service, so you can look at pirating as something that appears when the official methods aren’t good enough to be a part of a healthy media distribution market.
It seems like pirating is coming back a bit now there are multiple platforms with limited selection, each increasing their monthly rent while providing less value than ever. To get back to something roughly equivalent to terrestrial TV, you’re talking £40/month with multiple services, rather than £10 with the TV license.
You can move the argument to the ethics of the consumer if you want, but the other side of this intellectual property racket doesn’t exactly have a clear conscience either.
(I’ll pay for things I really want to watch, generally moving around subscriptions between services, but I’ll never use Amazon, so download anything only shown on that)
(Slight edit for clarity)

Personally I think going down the anarchist route is better, as Dee has already outlined, but if it’s a case of formalising it I’d happily put my name down for the risk.

I appreciate I’m not a huge poster here (although I’ve been a lurker for 15 years, only posting recently), but this place has absolutely changed my life, and needs to exist in this same form.
@Velocio, in just two words, thank you, but there is a heart full of praise for your work in ways than I could not say.

Just had a huge row with my family when they visited us for pre-Christmas. They’re very much not socially or politically aware, and are so so far away from accepting anything that even slightly deviates from their norms.
I hate that they’re so hateful, I hate that there’s a world view which is so hateful, so reductive, so insular. The obsession and identity with, and of, categorical black and white thinking. The dismissal of any idea, fact, or reason for nuance.
The idea that others are simply play things for their strict worldview.
Just fuck that, and fuck them, for the things they’ve said, which I won’t post here.

3.0. Aggressive flash and rhrythm modes are incredibly dangerous to all other road users, especially at high lumen. Distracting and dazzling is not "seen".
100%. The best rear light I’ve used has a mode where the LEDs go round the edge of the rounded rectangle shape, so it’s on constantly, but moving, so it’s easier to track where a rider is. About a quarter of the radius is lit up at any one time, and it kind of fades in/out as it moves around. Annoyingly though the charging was a nightmare.
2.1 Secondary downlights or floor marking on front lights are unecessary and distracting for riders and drivers alike
This also seems like a great idea, never used that style of light though so can’t really say how effective it might be.

LFGSS and Microcosm shutting down 16th March 2025 (the day before the Online Safety Act is enforced)
Yeah you’re right, @🅑🅐🅣🅣 said the same in the other thread too. I was just curious about the obvious alternative domain name really.
