Im about 5 foot 8. its just that little bit too much in the reach for me, shows up on the long rides.

That's about the size of frame I would expect to ride for your height, I'm about the same height and ride a 55 frame.

My expereince is much as dommyracer, 8.5 hours run time navigating garmin fomat file with cadence and heart rate, no back light on and lots of capacity left at the finish line, (the garmin that is!)

Was this ever going to go anyother way?

Mrs ROOG’s bike is firmly strapped into the Turbo in the shed, she does thousands of miles a year going nowhere! When I do get her out on her bike, usually on holidays, she finds the roads/lanes too intimidating.

I’m currently getting the daggers by my mates wife for getting him interested in bikes/cycling, his wife can’t understand what’s got into him!

Mine are going quite rusty where the chrome has come off, so apart from cosmetics, they do the job.

With regard to swaping over to road pedals I can understand that the bigger platform might be a good thing and I thought about changing to the speedplay system, (for the float) but when I saw the cleat I could see me doing a bit of skating at the lights.

I have been using shimano M520 MTB pedals for commuting for a few years and whilst I would like to stick with MTB shoes I was wondering if I am missing out on anything by sticking with these low end pedals?

The XT M770’s seem to be quite a bit more expensive and I note that other manufactures also do more costly alternatives to my old M520’s, what do you get for the extra money?

If you are thinking of fabrication, Piano wire from a model shop will make a good spring, just take care as piano wire is brittle and should be worked hot. probably easier to source one, that spring in the picture looks tricky to make.
