I tend to store the bike there most of the time as it's close to where I'm staying and I can't take it inside (plus it was a secure looking thick metal rack under a CCTV camera in a well lit open area, visible from many adjacent buildings and roads - probably much harder to steal than if I kept it inside).

I was away for a few of days whist they refurbished the store. There were no signs or warnings that it would be taken, though I can understand that they wanted to replace the rack. There's no other CCTV cams covering the area, and I've been chasing them about this for 3 weeks, meaning that any footage would probably be gone anyway (If you know what I'm saying...)

Sainsbury's local management claim the contractors didn't tell them about removing any bikes, and that they currently have no information and can't do anything. Essentially they seem to be saying that the contractors were operating independently of Sainsbury's jurisdiction and responsibility. This does not wash with me.

I bet there were other bikes attached that were also taken, some other people seemed to store theirs there regularly.

They would definitely remember removing mine as it had £200 worth of locks holding it in place, including an Abus Granit extreme 59, multiple cables, and an alarmed padlock. In total, the thing probably weighed more than the rack it was locked to along with the concrete, and would have made quite a bit of noise.

I'll be chasing up the contractors as well as Sainsbury's head office, and depending on the response will be reporting it as stolen.

Thanks GA2G, I've been considering options after the local store management weren't able to help (really useless). They don't appear to be accepting any liability or that there's any recourse.

It was directly under the CCTV cameras (which was why I kept it there), but apparently they weren't operating due to the refurbishment...

I had a bike (cannondale F400) removed by contractors renovating Sainsbury's.

They took out the entire bike rack and removed the bike, and Sainsbury's claim no knowledge and nothing can be done. I'm not sure if this counts as "stolen", but it feels like it should. At least I know that with all my locks and alarms they must remember removing it, as it would have been a devil of a job (let's just say I was following the "Locks that work" thread very thoroughly)

Be aware that even secure concreted thick metal bike racks might just get up and walk someday. I won't be trusting Sainsbury's racks again anyway.
