Me forgetting to unclip and falling sideways infront of a bus stop full of people on Abbey Street = Fail.
Had my own fail this morning. Got a spasm in my neck so went no-handed to shake my shoulders out. Wind took front wheel and I ate the tarmac in the blink of an eye, right in the middle of a west end rat race so a pavement full of audience. Thankfully road empty though so only pride and wrists hurt.

Just a wee heads-up
A cyclist was attacked in De Beauvior this evening...there has been a spate of attacks over the last 2 months. Some of the punks were caught...seems their back?
There were 3 police staking out the area when I went by 20 minutes ago, (but they won't be there all the time guys!) they recommend to stick to the main roads at night.
Basically avoid like the plague: Northchurch Road meeting Culford and Lawford Road.
Its the intersection where the bollads are (no car access and minimal lighting), heading through to DB square and onto Kingsland Road.(I read about the attacks on here, but I could not find the original thread to post in)
I saw 3 kids getting a talking to by 2 coppers on that junction last week, was only around 6pm but it made me think of these attacks. Probably completely unrelated though.

I've just gone from the stock 42x16 to 46x16. Wasn't sure what to expect as first time I've changed gear ratio but love it. I tend to get out the saddle more to get going but this is more than made up for by the reduction in spin at pace. Stuck some chain tensioners on whilst I was at it and enjoying the lack of movement from them too.

I think i may flip the wheel tonight and try it. I consider myself as very fit so the biggest concern apart from stoping the bike would be cycling on very bad roads with loats of wholes when i'm normally standing/not pedaling.
From my experience you'll try to freewheel once a day for the first week or so, it's mildly disconcerting though so the message soon sinks in.
I still use the front brake for a lot of my stopping, especially if needs to be done quickly. I do go through phases of breaking with legs but I started cycling due to the non-impact nature of it (I have a dodgy knee from cartilage removal) and the fixed gear breaking with your legs seems to move it towards an impact activity.

Hey, i have to dissapoint you. I have a flip flop hub:) I'm just not ready for it yet. Started to cycle sometime in june this year and i'm just getting used to london roads. Freewheel plus front brake just gave me more confidence than fixed.
I wasn't planning to defend other ss cyclists just myself.I think you'd get used to rising fixed quicker than you think, the main concern for me wasn't getting used to the London roads (I gave it two weeks freewheel) but getting the fitness. The nonstop pedaling left my legs ruined by the end of the week for the first couple of months.

so wait a second -
by certain people's definitions of a hipster on here, anyone who is fashionable becomes a loathsome 'hipster'? that's a bit much, no?
in any case, i don't think there's anything wrong with being fashionable if you're a decent person - who the hell cares what someone wears?Does seem that way a bit at the minute, half the hipster mocking videos on youtube (which seem about as original as the thing they're mocking) are nothing more than a list of clothing items. Could do the same about any subculture really.
I thought Nathan Barley had the mocking of the scene nailed 5 years ago anyway? And slightly more intelligently than naming a uniform.

Police on the southwest side of Farringdon Road/Rosebury Avenue crossroads today, hiding behind that big tree by the fire station like some kind of peeping tom.
Also a couple on the set of traffic lights maybe 100m east of Holborn Circus on Theobalds Road, they seemed to be in a forgiving mood though as a bloke in front of me jumped the lights but stopped before he reached them (he'd jumped the road the lights were for though) and all he got was a 'Next time' from one of them.
Colleague said Oxford Street had a few on too.

Already fed up of the sweaty bag back and strap lines on my top half, so ordered a large saddlebag and carradice bagman so I can say goodbye to the over the shoulder bag I'm currently using.
I'm normally OK for sweat except when I have bag. Was thinking of getting a bum bag as don't need a lot of storage but maybe saddlebag better.

I'm on my first few weeks of a new commute to. Also can't believe how quickly one gets into central London. Only have to do 5 miles each way though.
I rode freewheel for the first week or so to get used to route and get some fitness up then switched to fixed. Made quite a difference to the work out and my legs were very sore after the first 5 days and still a little sore after the weekend's rest. Getting easier though (or maybe I should be going faster now).
Loving it and definitely beats the overland Victoria line combination.

Lurker turned poster here.
New to this biking malarkey, bought a 2nd hand Langster 2010 off ebay, road it to work and back freewheel for a week (Hackney to West End), drops made an old neck injury flare up so swapped them for risers and made it fixed (nothing to do with neck that last bit) and am now on day four of fixed gear riding. Thighs are getting a little sore so looking forward to the weekend.
Can't believe I've got a tube and bus to work for the last 10 years, the bike is so much easier. Admittedly current weather probably helps and may change my tune come autumn, let alone winter.

Dalston blogger claiming the person wasn't on their bike and was pushing it across the road.
http://lovingdalston.blogspot.com/
I must've missed it by seconds as I live less than 100m away and got home pretty much 6pm on the dot.
