Hello All!
We (Cycling Club Hackney) are organising a track day at Herne Hill on Saturday 1st June, with a particular focus on creating an amateur international competition. If anyone is from abroad and would like to represent their 'home' country in the competition please get in touch! There could also be potential for riding for a country that one of your parents/grand-parents are from......
And again if anyone has links to track riders from around the world please invite them along to the day!
Here's a link to the event - hope to see some of you there!! :)

RIP
My condolences to the family and friends of the cyclist - very sad news indeed.
On another note - isn't this an area that was highligted recently as the CS was not going to be continued through the roundabout until after the Olympics? I think I remember Newham Council saying they didn't want to extend the CS over the roundabout because they didn't want to encourage any more cyclists to this dangerous junction?
Also @markbikeslondon I agree there should be another post for action on this - it just seems like this is happening far too often!

Did anyone see this already!?

Here's mine:
The first one is a LOOK KG227. It was sawn in half by some right c-unit who also stole my girlfriend's Bianchi. The two bikes were locked together.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/49912452@N04/6063105276Now they say that every cloud has a sliver lining. Well after that experience I decided to strip off most of the parts of my ruined LOOK KG227 and buy a new frame to move the parts across to. I ended up getting a LOOK KG271 off a chap in France and started to build it. I've only just now got it working thanks to some help from Pia in Hackney Wick I've taken it on a couple of rides and took it to the Crystal Palace Crits on Tuesday. I'm an appalling bike racer but I didn't finish anywhere near last and averaged a speed of 21.1 mph on a challenging circuit! Here's my new baby. :)

Just to see if there is any interest in vintage machines!

Ah nice! I have a 1952 Ernie Clements - Caladoc
It's still got the original paintwork but it is looking very tired. Hoping one day to get the frame restored - until then I'm riding it and although it doesn't look the part it still rides like the beat that it is!

Hello All,
On the Sunday 31st July my lady is running a 'Festival of the Bicycle'.
Inspired by the country village fete and themed around the bicycle it should be a right old wheeze! It's the same weekend as Hackney WickED arts festival so if you are going to that anyway you might as well pop along - we are just around the corner at Mabley Green the North end of Hackney Wick. The website is here: http://festivalofthebicycle.tumblr.com/
Everyone is welcome to come along! We'll have the tandem out, grass track racing round the green, all ability bikes provided by bike-works, a bicycle jumble sale, bicycle films and booze from the kenton, chinese bicycles, bicycle art, poetry, burritos, bikes from the bicycle library, bamboo bikes essentially anything and everything from the weird and wonderful bicycle world!
Please come along, bring all your friends and any unusual bikes. We will be having a bizarre bike race on the grass track!
-
That was awesome! First time I ever did the Dunwich Dynamo - and I did it on the tandem with my girl too!
We only decided to do it after it stopped raining at about 7pm so it was a bit of a mad dash to get everything together for the ride but set off around about 9pm from London Fields and thoroughly enjoyed it.The best bit however was after getting to the beach and sleeping for a couple of hours a very generous couple gave us and the tandem a lift all the way back to Hackney! Marvellous!
Funniest moment for me was when lying on the beach listening to a bunch of older chaps discussing the virtues of buying shoes from the pamphlets out of the Sunday Telegraph. They also stated to their wives that had come to pick them up - despite the ride starting in hackney there were some 'thouroughly decent people' on the ride.
I'd have to agree with them - thanks everyone for making the DD a brilliant experience!!
-
@tiswas we asked them for records on everything we had contacted them about in the last 6-months but they said there was no record of bikes being mentioned at all.
I don't really know what to do anymore - I'm going to contact the Financial Ombudsman and see if they can help.
Also I checked and M&S wont insure us because we live in a flood risk area :( tis a shame - we should be ok as long as the Thames Barrier is functioning!

It certainly seems like it is worth putting everything in writing yourself at the very least. I've had a few telephone conversations with financial people of various kinds where employee A says one thing and employee B says the exact opposite. If you can't get them to send you a letter stating what they say on the phone, you can write to them and basically say 'you said this on the phone, will you please confirm in writing'. And if you don't get a reply, take your business elsewhere.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing! If I could turn back the clock I'd have done a whole world of things differently. Certainly though with insurance companies you need to cover yourself at all costs - slippery bastards!
-
They are saying that we haven't named either of the bicycles on the house insurance which means we can't claim for them. The frustrating thing is that we called up to name our specific bicycles a few months before the theft and they said they didn't need to be specified. Unfortunately we didn't record our call and they claim the call never happened, so now we've been told something by one of their employees that isn't true and it's cost us two beautiful bicycles.
Anyhow after this experience with RBS Insurance we are now on the hunt for a different insurance company. Unfortunately we're not eligible for M&S Home Insurance so any other suggestions would be great!
-
Whatever you do **DO NOT INSURE WITH RBS HOME INSURANCE **we've had a terrible time with them. The bikes are supposed to be covered on the home insurance policy up to £450 when we called up to put our specific bikes on the policy that were worth more than £450 the chap told us they were covered under single item cover of up to £1500. When two bikes were no-more thanks to a bike theif they refused to pay out anything at all! Not even the £450 that any old bikes are supposed to be covered for.
On top of that you are treated by them like a criminal. All smiles when they are taking your premium but as soon as you want to make a claim they treat you like an insurance fraudster. Without a doubt the worst service I have ever paid for in my life.
AVOID RBS INSURANCE LIKE THE PLAGUE!!
-
Insurance companies name? DIrect line home insurance. avoid them like fucking daytime tv.
this was about 8yrs ago, but I would not believe their lies that they have changed.
All phone conversations I now have with banks, insurance, general toss pots are recorded from my end, their name and employee number extracted on tape at the beginning of the conversation.
FFS i'm only 24yrs and I'm about as bitter as the average 80yr old. / mini sat morn rant over. While you're at it avoid RBS Home Insurance as well - basically the same experience
-
has anyone tried one of these: http://www.integratedtrackers.com/GPSTrack/
Sounds good and is fairly reasonable price
-
Some more good news today. Just cycled to Victoria Park Village to see some guy eating a bag of chips while standing over my mate's bicycle that was nicked about a year ago, quickly called up reinforcements and got the bike back from him!
Probably only spotted it because I was looking at every bicycle for the Bianchi stolen on Saturday, truly bizarre but another win vs the bike thieves!
-
-
No they are just going back on everything they have previously said. When they're trying to get your premiums they promise you the moon on a stick, when you go to make a claim they treat you like you're a criminal.
All we found in the info they sent us was that the bikes should be covered as long as they're locked up. Now they're saying they don't cover bikes unless they are specifically mentioned on the insurance policy, however when we phoned to put them on it they told us they were covered and we didn't have to specify anything! They're just a bunch of lying bastards - steer well clear if I was you.
-
what sort of problems are you getting?
Well shortly after getting the Look and Bianchi we called them up to ask if we could add them specifically to the insurance, the chap told us that they were covered under the house insurance anyway and we didn't need to do anything extra. Now they're saying they're not covered at all!!
We've got records that proved we made the call but they're still being incredibly unhelpful and denying that the bikes were covered. They seem determined that their standard customer is a thief trying to make a false claim and will do anything they can not to pay out! We're giving them £26 per month for the pleasure of being treated like sh*t as well!!
Yes anyone - especially amateur riders can join the races!
There's some more info on the facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/events/525054264212300/
I don't think we have a team pursuit scheduled in but if we had enough teams I don't see why not - for fun it should be international teams!!
