This is a Columbus (SL I think) frame by Paganini from about 1979-83, sorry I can’t be more precise. The Paganini brand was made in Italy by Ciocc for a shop in Ghent, Belgium, called Plum. Interestingly this frame was originally finished in a layer of transparent plum-coloured lacquer over the chrome. They were regarded as very high-end racing cycles in their day.
I acquired it on eBay about 7 years ago with a load of late ‘90s kit on it and decided to restore it to its original state as far as possible. It’s a full on racing machine (you’ll see the little bracket under the front end of the top tube for a race number) and I have built it up as a classic Italian race bike of the period. The fork blades were replaced by Argos four years ago as there was a crack in one of the originals.
It’s vintage Campagnolo Record or Super Record pretty much throughout: front and rear mech, chainset, brakes, levers, hoods, hubs, and bottom bracket. Zeus headset. Mavic GP4 rims. Vittoria tubs (both brand new). Cinelli stem, bars and saddle. The seatpost is a Super Record copy, as are the pedals.
Size: 55cm c-c seat tube, 56 cm c-c top tube. The condition is very good for its age but not concourse, although it could be brought to this level without too much outlay. The chrome is just starting to become a little rough in one or two corner areas such as the bb cluster (annoyingly, there is a bit of pitting on the Argos fork blades). The bike has been ridden and enjoyed rather than wrapped in cotton wool.

A rare and very beautiful bike, rides like a dream on those tubs. £850.

A lovely set of handbuilts by HR. Ambrosio Excellight rims, Ambrosia Zenith hubs, Campag 13/26 cassette. Hardly used, under 200 miles on them but I no longer have a Campag bike so they must go. As I'm sure most on here know Harry Rowland is regarded as one of, if not the, country's leading wheel builders.
£180. They cost well over twice that.

His original plan was to make a geared racing bike - decided to go fixed later - track ends would have severely limited the options - He was going to grind off the hanger and eyes but I advised leaving them on - I just love the cynical, suspicious take you sometimes get on this forum! Heh heh, does no harm to keep the bullshit radar working.
The local frame builder I mentioned btw is Tom Warmerdam at Demon Frameworks - if you're around Southampton check him out - his work is right up there with the best UK builders. -

Maybe he wanted to build a conversion from scratch? :-)
The tubeset, lugs and dropouts came from Ceeway - supplied with derailler hangers and mudguard eyes to maximise options.
He got the geometry essentially by copying the set up on his racing bike with a couple of tweaks. The most demanding bit of the project was attaching the seat stays to the lug - there were no top eyes from Ceeway so he was expected to mitre the stays to fit round the lug - took it to a local frame builder who said first effort wasn't safe so got top eyes instead. Much easier.

My son has just built this - his first fixed. When I say built it I mean he made the frame from scratch - uncut tubes and all - sorted out the geometry, cut tubing, brazed it all together, sprayed at a local finishers, scavenged parts from shed and existing bikes, got surname decal made for downtube, I bought him wheelset, chain and pedals, job done. He's 14. Not bad...

This firm does very good quality chrome plating at about 1/2 Argos price - http://www.applegate.co.uk/engineering/prestige-electro-metals-coating-treatment-1251223.htm
The blue Columbus sticker dates the frame as early to mid eighties, as previous post says. They didn't put SL or SLX on until later.
