"As a rule of thumb, a gearing in gear inches the same as a person's height in inches is a comfortable gear for riding on the flat" says Wikipedia.
However, my ride would be spinny as heck if that were true.

Don't know how far "too long is" but going South gives you good options too.
About 10 miles: Norwich > Trowse > Stoke Holy Cross (turn left up Stoke Road*) > Poringland > Arminghall > Trowse > Norwich
- Resembles an actual hill
About 20 miles: Norwich > Trowse > Stoke Holy Cross (left after the Church) > Shotesham > Brooke** > Bergh Apton > Poringland > Arminghall > Trowse > Norwich.
** Or turn left on the Norwich road to cut out the Bergh Apton part and shave a few miles off.
Or longer still, don't turn off in Stoke and keep going to Saxlingham, Hempnall, Woodton, Seething, Mundham, Brooke then as above. Around 35 miles.

I've no idea on bars, I've always had drops. I don't want funny narrow hipster bars so perhaps something like these? They're only for commuting so I don't need bombproof DH bars. Risers I'm not sure on, the frame is quite tight as it is so I think they'll make me a bit too upright.
