A driver pulled across into Jeffreys road through queuing traffic this morning around 9am and didn't check to see no-one was coming along the cycle lane. As a result a guy on a roadie had no time to brake on his way down the CS7 towards Stockwell and went straight into the back passenger side door.
A few pedestrians stopped to help while I was on the phone to the ambulance/police, and helped to divert the traffic. The guy was clearly hurt - he didn't move from the road until the ambulance moved him and was taken to hospital with a neck brace on. I really hope he's ok, it looked pretty serious.
The impact was enough to snap the forks from the steerer, he was probably travelling at close to 20mph at the time (at a guess). I was really lucky to be a few metres behind him - far enough to go around the car.
The driver claimed that a car in the queuing traffic flashed him to go, though clearly neither car was aware of whether the cycle lane was clear at the time. Unsurprisingly the car that flashed (and must have seen what happened) didn't stop and I don't think anyone got the registration. The scary thing is that so many drivers think that they can tell another car when to go and when it's safe, you see it all the time.
Thoughts are with the guy, hoping he makes a full and speedy recovery.

Thanks for the responses!
I know it seems a bit odd to want to replace the fork over the brake, but it's a nice brake and cost £45 so I'd rather not get rid of it if I can help it. I was hoping to find second hand forks for £20-30 but haven't seen any yet. It's so frustrating because it's literally 1-2mm off fitting perfectly.
Thanks for the links to the cheaper chainset, I'll definitely go for the stronglight I think.
@jonseager Which adjustment screw? I thought it was just the allen adjustments on the sides of the caliper which changed the reach.
@fasih I don't really have a strict budget but want to get parts that will last hopefully.

My 09 SE Lager has been used to get to and from work for the last 2 years (60 miles a week) and needs quite a lot of work, namely:
- new wheels
- new forks
- new chainring
- new cranks
I'm fairly sure I'm going to get new wheels built at www.v-sprint.com but I'm not so sure about the others.
I don't mind the forks I have at the moment, but a year or so ago I bought a Shimano Ultegra front brake but the reach isn't quite long enough for the forks. It's only very slightly off, but the result is that the pads rub on the tyre very slightly, meaning I need a new front tyre every few months. I've been looking online to find some fairly basic cr-mo black forks with 1-1/8" steerer suitable for short drop calipers but I'm struggling a bit. I stumbled across these fuji fc-440 carbon forks looked like they could fit the bill, but I'm not sure whether my headset would fit (the 'integrated' bit put me off). Is there any way to be sure? Can anyone recommend a cheap pair of 1-1/8" threadless forks that might suit a short drop caliper? I'm not averse to second hand but most of the forks I see coming up in the classifieds are 1" threaded.
For a chainset, I really like the look of the Stronglight Track 2000 chainset on Velosolo but it seems a lot cheaper that some of the other ones? Any idea why? Anyone think it's a good idea or bad idea?
Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to offer!

All seems fine at the moment, I don't want to give you the impression I'm really eager to spend money, its just that I can imagine with most OTP bikes (especially the cheaper ones) there are gonna be some components that are probably fairly basic. The question was maybe a bit too open ended i guess!
As a newcomer I was just basically wondering if there's anywhere that manufacturers tend to use sub standard componentry. That might be too general a question too i guess!

I just wanted to add my 2p. I had read this (and other) thread(s) about Winstanley before buying my 2009 SE lager, but I thought I'd just go for it anyway as it was £35 cheaper than evans. I placed my order at 11pm on thursday night and recieved my bike yesterday (monday) morning. It was the right model, right size etc, exactly as I was expecting.
My only gripe really is that the bike didn't come even part assembled. I think wiggle and other bike distributors send their online orders out with minimal assembly required, I think just attaching the front wheel or something along those lines, whereas I had to measure, cut and route the brake cables, fit the stem, bars, peddles etc. I haven't done it before and didn't find it too difficult but I can imagine that some people wouldn't be so sure. It did amuse me that on the top of the box it said in big bold letters "THIS BIKE MUST BE FULLY ASSEMBLED AT DEALER".
Ok their communication might not be as good as some of the other companies (no "your order has been despatched" email) but I'm very satisfied overall, I think that some self assembly was well worth the £35 I saved.
No dings or dents although some small wear to the paint where there are cables that rub - not very much and I'll send some pictures for you. Also a scuff to the back of the saddle but still some life left in it.
For the pedals they are double sided so SPD on one side and a flat platform for normal shoes on the other. I think I have some plastic platform pedals in a box somewhere which I could fit if you prefer.
