So looking at the attached it seems obvious now - is it that the NDS cup has not been screwed in far enough leaving the exposed NDS axle too short to properly seat the crank therefore causing it to come loose. Which also means that when the crank bolt is tightened hard the crank is pulled against the cup causing it to not spin freely?

I've replaced a bottom bracket on a vintage frame. Token square taper, FSA Gimondi. Once all tightened I've got the perfect chain line and everything is buttery quiet.

So, I lent the bike to a friend and the NDS (left) crank fell off - I have no idea how long it might have been loose for as I wasn't riding it. Upon inspection the crank arm isn't chewed up and the BB is in perfect shape.

Now when tightening up the crank bolt, it appears to over tighten and cause friction and prevents the cranks spinning freely.

The BB has seen less than 100 miles so can't believe that is the problem... one thought is that when installing the BB I didn't get the thread chased and there appears to be a thread or two protruding from the BB shell on the NDS - could this case the crank arm to be pulled too far into the BB and cause friction?

Crazy... are the QRs replaceable for a thru-axle on the XT hubs? If not, that would be my only suspicion.

The highlighted part of my Gran Compe hub split in half (picture below) - slightly bemusing as it hasn't happened in 16 years of riding fixed. Which also makes me feel a bit silly as I should know what it is - I certainly use my cone spanners on them, but is it a cone? Thought I'd embarrass myself on here before I do it in my LBS. Also would like to know where to get one.

Thanks for the replies, it's a leave it alone job. Gonna be a fair old nubbin on there once the bone fuses - only hope I'll not have problems with bags/slinging my kids about.
