Thanks Number6
Checked it out and all seems good.
I have quick release bolts on my rear wheel - will this still work?
DO I need to measure the width of the QR bolts to make sure that the width can accomodate the extra 8mm?
Let me know and I'll do a PayPal transfer / eBay purchase if you prefer.
Regards

Hi there,
my chain keeps jumping out especially when on bumpy road.
I need to tighten the chain but could do with a pair of chain tugs.
The drop outs are short (about an inch) and semi-horizontal forward facing. (hope picture helps)
Would be grateful if someone had a pair to to get rid of for not too much sheets! Not too keen on introducing my teeth to the pavement in a hurry!!!
Live in Hackney so can collect.
Thanks

I've got a Mavic Module E2 Argent to a Dura Ace hub. This would be fine for single speed (just take the 5-speed cassette off). It's a great hub. The wheel needs two spokes replaced.
30 quid if you're interested.
Horatio - it's in the bag - received with extreme gratitude...
will PM you regarding logistics

Using a bell on a towpath is not self-centered.
Point taken -
now try a jangling bell inflicted on an unsuspecting granny laden with shopping trundling down to her house while some impatient cyclist tries to pass her from the inside.I witnessed this last week when I visited my folks.
All I was trying to say in my post is that it's all relative. Read it in that spirit...

Perhaps paranoia, but I've also got my bike stolen twice already.
Unless I am mistaken, I don't think cyclists are specially targeted. Inner cities always have violence and crime - also suburbs such as West Ewell, Southall, etc.
It is a sad state of affairs but one that we all have to be careful and prepare for such events by taking precautions - Edscoble talks about locking up appropriately...
One idiot friend of mine bought a £750 Specialized bike, and parked it outside Exmouth street market and went in for a few jars - guess his surprise when he came back and even his lock was nicked...nothing to say to him on this occasion.
On a more important note, I would be surprised (and worried) if my friends sat in a pub discussing how to get tooled up because there were reports of muggings or crime against pedestrians.
Please please when you get a chance speak to one of the many taxi drivers, especially minicab drivers - they will have enough anecdotes about having crow bars, machetes, baseball bats etc under their drivers seats and where this got them.
Where I grew up in West London, there was a time kiddies used to hide behind bushes in the Grand Union Canal in the dark by Stonebridge Park and scare the shit out of cyclists and watch them fall into the canal - however, there was no free newspapers and the internet to spread this news like wildfire and thankfully it didn't become a phenomenon such as "happy slapping" or "steaming" etc.
Now people cycle past the same canal and it is the cyclists scaring the crap out of the elderly returning with their shopping along the towpath - with their grunts, bells, swearing etc - thankfully there are no groups of pedestrians discussing how to tool up and deal with these self-centred cycle loons.
FYI, it is illegal to walk (or even cycle) around tooled up!!!

I used to work at City Uni which is in Angel/Clerkenwell border - If you don't mind walking a wee bit, then you can cycle down St. John's Street and park it in City University bike park (Northampton Square) - they have about 87489479827 cameras trained on the area and security guards and loads of bikes parked there.
That said, my mate lost an old Dawes from there and no one (security/cameras) had a lot to say...

racers are not for everyone.. not sure why you care, if he is happy on a mtb then who cares. it's her riding not you . any bike is a good bike
She wants an excuse to play on this forum - that's why ;-)
Well, seriously though, I suppose it is one of those ongoing debates we have been having about MTB vs. Roadies - tea/coffee thing I suppose
I think what I couldn't help her with was when she said that she couldn't take one hand off to signal, look over shoulder etc...

There's that vintage bike shop north of Dalston which looks pretty sweet. Only been by while it was closed though. Maybe that? I don't remember the name, but someone posted about it on the forum about a year ago (maybe Winston?)...
Horatio, is it Barclays Bikes?
There is another shop tucked away just as Stokie begins on the left called Daycock's Bikes

so i am now in the heartland of lfgss, i just wanna know in terms of bikes what i can do around this area?
To add to Archipelago's suggestions of Akitas and pitbulls here are a few more:
- lose the helmet
- lose the reflective vest (if used)
- lose the CatEye lights and reflectors
- grow hair longish,
- buy some plaid shirts and clothes circa 1950/60 (Joanie / Archie Cunnignham)
- Oversized wayfarers
- Get some unfeasibly worn out vintage brogues
- Take a Macbook and sit in either Spreadeagle or the coffee shop in the corner and watch the carnage
Oh...and void catching the eyes of the real 'locals' who are still recoveing from the shock of it all...
WELCOME!!!!!!!!!
- lose the helmet

My friend has a go on my Pug SS road bike - sensible handle bars, 700-23 tyres, firm ride (ahem) and all that...
She has been a life-long MTB Hard Tailer - Scott USA being the current one...
She nearly had a heart attack going round the Shoreditch one way system and came back ashen faced.
Reckons the ride feels treacherous and twitchy and generally felt exposed...and less in control - is this a transition thing?
Any tips, or words of encouragement? Or do I rest my evangelical hat and let her trundle around in the Land Rover tyred MTB?

Thanks Dammit - the problem is that I don't know what the bike is worth - ball park figure even. I mean he will probably get about 30 Euros out there if he is lucky.
What is the story with the bike? Was it one of the better ones? My ignorance frustrates;-)
I certainly don't have any emotional ties to this bike.

why would you re-sale something your brother is giving you?
Oh - sorry, I suppose it is not clear why I am selling it - he wants to sell the bike anyway as he is having a clearout - just that there is no market for bikes in Athens. Nothing skanky on my part
I reckon it should cost a bit to put it in Olympics / BA's hold when he comes over?

Hi all,
Some advice needed:
My brother-in-law has a Raleigh bicycle hanging off the ceiling - he tells me that he bought this bike brand new over 25 years ago...
The bike is a Raleigh "Ventura" with 531 Reynolds tubing, Weinmann brakes, wheelset (I think) and is measured for him (he is 5' 11")
The bike looks perfect and has all original parts - if I remember rightly the tyres still have those "new tyre hairs" on it.
I know he has never really ridden it either - well it is Athens afterall :)
Now the question - he is happy to let me have it which is cool - however, my brother-in-law is Greek and the bike is in his garage in Athens Greece!
Question is this: Would it be worth my while to pay to get it shipped over here to London?
Is the bike worth much? What would be a typical resale value of such a bike? Any pointers, wisdom, ideas on price welcome...

I think you'll find you're out of the nursery and can go posting new threads in the classifieds section.
Thanks for (and I am serious) - Now time for me to go and annoy those pesky Primary School Kiddies...
BTW, cruel humour and a bit of witty sarcasm is lost on my teutonic personality :-)
Hope to contribute more fruitfully in the future...

OK - I have read it and digested the information. This stands out:
*"Effectively there is a cooling-off period in which new members should get acclimatised to the forum and get to see how it works, and the forum should get a moment to become familiar with the new person. We are basically forcing you to ease yourself in gently... but honestly, doing so is better for you, this place can be harsh so just go with it."*
Now let me make my case: I am very much in contact with members of your forum (I daren't say 'our forum' in case I am still in the quarantine...sorry nursery) on a face-to-face basis.
Lovely people that you all are in person, you actually care about the reality of what happens in the outside world - I NEEDED a chainring with 110 BCD to complete a recycling project by this week - I nearly went out and bought one from the shops when one of your **own **considerate members told me to ask within this forum as people are keen to recycle their parts and generally support initiatives.
She also told me not to spam, troll, threaten, spit, swallow etc etc - she also told me to come in and be timid, demure, shy and ask innocent questions which would then allow me to introduce my motive - this in my book is **lower **than stating my motive upfront.
Indeed, if I had asked for advice on where to get frame paint to match my existing nail varnish colour, perhaps the flaming would have been worth it...
So, my crime was to mistakenly post in the wrong area - I apologise and am happy to delete my post but guess what - us toddlers can't do this.
So, all noted and I remain reprimanded and exiled in my nursery for however long you see fit.
Just don't go damaging your chainrings or chucking them down the canal because of my childish need to ask for a spare part - for which I would have been happy to pay what was asked of course...

Don't be so rude as to ask - also, don't you know it gives you hairy palms! :)
