Hi all
I need a stoker, or if they want to take turns or ride on the front all the way, I don't mind, for the Dunwich Dynamo this weekend.
Could you spread the word on this, I have tried before to do the Dynamo, I drove down in my distinctive A-team van a few years ago to pick up some mates and throw free tubes to people who had punctured but life has always got in the way of riding it; I really want to do it this year, I bought a tandem specially!
I have had two stokers pull out on me for the Dunwich Dynamo this/last week so if anyone wants to try a good Peugeot gents/gents (but fine for a reasonably tall - 5 foot 6 and up I reckon, lady also) tandem with a reasonably fit 57 year old male (but young at heart as they say), please get in touch. I am a pretty experienced cyclist and motorcyclist etc so should be a safe pair of 'bars.
The tandem has been thoroughly serviced and tested, new tyres, brakes, chains, lights mudguard, tools, spare parts, etc, and has comfortable Madison saddles NOT racing saddles. Plain pedals but toe clips can be fitted if you want them.
I will be leaving a car at Dunwich this week so no worrying about getting back by coach or waiting around for transport etc.
I am based in Islington but ride the tandem to Clapham each day if that helps for meeting up for a practice etc.
It is much faster and less effort by tandem, half the wind resistance for one thing, and very sociable...

Hi all, I have taken the liberty of starting a new thread although I know there is a good Dunwich Dynamo thread, as I am really stuck.

Beijing as China’s undisputed Hipster capital of China is in shock this week as China’s Boy’s in Blue are issuing a crack down on fixed gear bikes that are sans brakes. In recent months there has been a spate of accidents by brakeless fixed gear bike riders which have ended in the rider leaving the mortal coil for the great bike ride in the sky, now it seems GuLou district in Beijing are cracking down on riders who are without brakes and handing out 500RMB fines, at least according to the AntHill website in English
The anthill
I don’t generally post news on the Anthill, as it’s designed for narrative writing and there are too many China news aggregators anyway. But this is breaking news I discovered myself and have to share: the municipal authorities for the Gulou area of central Beijing have, as of midnight last night, made riding fixed gear bicycles in the area against the law.
I found this out last night when out on the town with a friend who was wheeling his fixie down Guloudongdajie. A policeman stopped us, inspected the front of my friend’s bike, then shook his head and said we were to come with him. At the police station on Baochao hutong, he pointed out a notice plastered outside, outlining the new regulation.
We couldn’t believe our eyes. Fixies have been made illegal due to “safety concerns”, and there is a 500 RMB fine for riding one in the Dongcheng district. We badgered the policeman for more information, and he (grudgingly) fetched someone else who told us that fixies were not safe (“???”) because of their simpler mechanism with no gears and no brakes.
This is patently ridiculous for so many reasons. For starters, it’s only a certain kind of fixed gear bike that doesn’t have brakes. But that’s beside the point. If you’re going to pass a law to protect cyclers, make it mandatory to wear a bloody helmet and have bike lights. It’s like addressing food safety concerns by outlawing eating while walking down the street.
Frankly, this seems directed at the expat population. Fixed gear bicycles are popular in this area of Beijing, and mostly among foreigners. There’s a store on Wudaoying hutong which specialises in them. Poor guys, I guess they’ll be “asked to tea”. What will Beijing’s hipsters be reduced to? Are they going to outlaw Fei Yue trainers next? Or maybe brunch?
I asked the policeman if there was anywhere else this regulation was in force. Yes, he said. The French concession in Shanghai. Worse and worse. Can anyone in Shanghai confirm this?

Hello, I noticed you put up a pic of a PX/PY-10 Peugeot and said you wanted the same but bigger. I have a 1980 PKN-10 (one down from the PX/PY of that year). It is 62 cm I think, I have a 33 inside leg and am 6 foot tall and it is too big for me! I have been riding it on and off for years but have to admit defeat. Give me a ring if you are interested, pics are here (it got stolen but I recovered it, posted the tale on here): http://www.lfgss.com/thread26120.html

Hi there
This is a bit of a long shot but I had talked to Paul (rat-racer) about swapping this frame for my PKN10 frame (exactly the same year, metallic blue etc, but a 64 cm that is too big for me) as he wanted a larger frame. I lost his number and then changed my number so he could not call me. I have ridden mine for many thousands of miles but it has always been too big really. If you have not used this frame and would consider selling it or swapping for mine (good condition, a few scratches and stickers a little patchy but no dents), I would be very grateful. Thank you, Slimlavud 07896 921115 I am in Central, North and West London. -

SOLD SOLD SOLD
I have found myself with two tandems, probably one more than even the most active Lothario requires.
So, the Claud Butler ladyback tandem is for sale:
21 1/2 inch front
21 inch rear
Blue metallic, lugs picked out in white paint, quite faded and some surface rust but generally very good
No tubing identity decals/labels, so probably not 531 or 501, also no model designation stickers/decals
Clip-on pump pegs on bottom horizontal tube
Dynamo bracket on front forks
26 X 1 3/8 inch wheels, Westwood rims with side braking area on them, rust spots (more on front than rear) but still very usable and not too scruffy
Atom rear hub, unknown steel front, good bearings, both bolt-up
Very good tyres
Good plastic silver front mudguard with black strip and mudflap at base, no rear mudguard
Weinmann centre pull brakes with new KoolStop pads, plain Weinmann-type alloy granny levers, black ribbed cables, all oiled through and working smoothly
Handlebars are plain steel, flattish at front, Western raised three inches at rear
Atom original rear hub brake, just adjusted and cleaned, works well
GEARS
Near new five-speed Shimano block with pretty low first gear - do any hills
Shimano Titlist rear alloy mech, works well, downtube shifter
NO FRONT MECH or multi rings
Near new front and rear chains, spring loaded jockey wheel for front chain tension
Cottered steel chrome cranksets, good chrome and condition
Both bottom brackets stripped, cleaned and greased, with caged ball bearings in good condition
Foam saddles, front OK, rear broken on one side, still usable

I recently got stuck trying to find bearings and axles and brake parts for the rear Atom hub (with drum brake and five-speed block) on my 1982 Peugeot Grand Touring tandem. I tried cycle shops, tandem specialists etc and then had the thought that Motobecane, Mobylette etc mopeds might have the same rear hub. I found a chap in Leamington Spa who has a lot of NOS moped parts and he supplied me with bearing cones and the removable cups at a reasonable price.
He is Barry Ward, at bwace@msn.com
I have no business connection with him aside from being a satisfied customer.
I did track down some new hubs in the USA, on ebay, at $150 dollars, so there are some around. Another solution would be a Hope tandem hub (without drum brake of course) from SJS Cycle at £102 pounds but I like having the drum brake. -
I had one of these rather primitive computers on my 1980 PKN10E before it was stolen (see http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=67267&highlight=stolen+recovered for the full story).
Mine was silver with black buttons but I cannot be fussy now...
Would really like another one, they were probably Velotech KS2 computers (it said Made in Hong Kong on the back!) re-badged by or for Peugeot. I still have the original sliver and chequered box for mine, and the instructions (I bought it from a bike shop on ebay NOS a few years ago). Someone must have an old (or even new) one lying about in their cellar/shed?Bump please

they were picked up last night, so not them unless the guy trued and re-built them with new hubs and cassette, and then took day for night photos, all in the space of about 2 hours last night. they are great rims, were just a bit fucked and haven't got time to sort them out / space to keep spares. the chap said he was gonna put them on his everday bike.
Thanks for the wheels Iain. Yes, I am going to put them on my 1980 Peugeot PKN10 as the original Mavic Module E rims have been bent, straightened, bent again, straightened in the vice between blocks of wood, trued, bent again, I could go on...
Such is riding Islington to Chiswick most days (20 mile round trip), through the parks and along the river at Hammersmith...
I am quite good at building wheels/repairs but I am not sure if I could have rebuilt them that fast and got them to a photo studio to snap, and got them on Gumtree...
But thanks all for the confidence in my abilities... Slim -

As Dan says, a major problem is that the bottom bracket is too low, add to this the short cranks and you have a recipe for serious ligament, muscle and knee joint problems as you inevitably spedn a lot time grinding - pedalling far too slowly. 90 -110 per minute and NO slow turning starts. I will be dead by the time all the fixed/singlespeed trendies are costing everyone a fortune in NHS payments but my kids will have to pay. So just don't do it.
Because, let's face it, it is a trend and in a few years, fgss will have died out a lot and people will be collecting Sturmey Archer or something...
-
the main PRACTICAL disadvantage is that the bottom bracket will be lower —*meaning you'll be more likely to get pedal strike. The solution is to use short cranks, but you'll get less leverage and so it will be harder work.
Oh and track drop outs make it easier to tension the chain, but only marginally.
There is also the fact that the geometry will be slacker, which will affect the handling— but this is a matter of personal preference.
The only other objections will be aesthetic - I personally think it's a bit sad when people 'slay' lovely road frames to make them into 'fixies'.. but each to his own. As long as you don't saw off the cable guides and mech hanger you'lll be able to convert it back when you get a 'proper' track bike

Rutless efficiency.
In fairness you now look abit silly - being 53 you should probably be old enough to realise you should think twice before you speak, or this case type, as you now look like a juvenile trying to wiggle your way out a hole.
Rutless? I am confused now.
At my age, I can remember a time before gay meant anything more than carefree, possessed of a love of life etc, if that is trying my way out of a hole then I am guilty.
Clark Gable's character in the last film he made was called Gaylord - Gay for short. It was a fairly popular christian name for men when I was young in the US. Think we all need to be a bit more open-minded - PC has gone a bit crazy in some areas...
Thanks Charlotte but I found a stoker, also called Simon. Then I came down with a heavy cold and it will turn to pneumonia or ebola or something if I try the Dynamo so if anyone wants to borrow a fantastic tandem for the event, call me on 07896 921115.
