well this is new to me but -
The guy at a local bike repair shop put in new cables etc new pads on the back (they were rotten with reconstituted aluminium)
but what interested me more was-
he switched the spacers on the brake pads so the fat one is on the inside. It's made a heap of difference with regards to maintaining tension and performance.
There's little squealing, the cable isn't under as much stress to the point of fraying and stretching. I can also remove the noodle with ease.
So as Tommy says new cables! coupled with this eccentric setup have cured(at the mo' fingers crossed) the damned cross brakes saga.
thanks all, enjoy the sunshine. -
the drop levers are Tektro, the cross tops have no branding , I'm assuming they are tektro also.
It seems that I'm having to fiddle with them on a regular basis. Not a sturdy config for a cross bike methinks. Tension lacking in general. Is this a common gripe with this setup or just my ineptitude?
I've contacted Spesh and they wont budge and blame setup; the store put them right temporarily. this is my commute bike on road and trail. It's great thing apart from the above.
any setup ideas,,, thanks to all for the advice so far. -
have had trouble with the brake setup for my singlecross since day one. They were adjusted at the shop,, but I'm still not that happy. Does anyone have an opinion on the drop and cross lever coupled with vbrake setup!?
re-installing rear wheel, any procedures to folllow? being horizontal dropouts I'm doing it by eye i.e. making sure the wheel is straight in the frame. Tried trawling the net for a definitive method ,, to no avail. -

great idea, although I've been a member of the site for about 6 weeks or so. Even replied to the questionnaire,, the t shirt comp etc. Still cant get to ask a question/new thread.
Have i done I made a mistake somewhere.
While I'm here,,,
my singlecross is making a 'tonka tonka' type noise with power on (majority of the time). chain is clean, about 2months it's gotten more prominent with time. Any ideas?? -
thanks for the reply!
sorry for the delay in my return. Tried all possible solutions:(
I've got to put it in for it's first service so I'll get the guys to check it out there. I don't think that it's a snag. Just a low tension problem and the compatability issue you mentioned.
Specialized have replied to my enquiry but nothing concrete.I'm sorely tempted to remove them and leave the drops. -
Hi
hope you're still out there after 2 years!! Just want to know if the brake problem was eradicated ? Just got a singlecross and the double lever setup is melting my head. Spesh haven't bothered to change the design obviously. have emailed the support so I hope they have an answer. Have adjusted the brakes to various settings but nothing lasts.
the cable to the rear brake isn't returning the pads back on release. tried tension springs etc to no availany advice would be great
brilliant, no mincing around there. There's too much slickness in the singlespeed world I say! maybe the 'make do' approach could be a new thread. although I agree they look shit.
I'm going to get a seat post setup,, the 32's on my singlecross aren't going to benefit from the roadracer jobs. Any DIY suggestions Bigfoot!!?
