I'm pretty sure the internet kills wildlife.
I don't know how it would do it, but my gut tells me it's true.Increasing demands for land due to increasing numbers of data centres* and mining for new tech raw materials?
(*apparently we have created 120 exabytes of data in existence. The rate we are going, by the end of the year there will be about 4000 exabytes).

Yes - exactly. As long as everyone involved is clear that you a producing a mock-up, and that a mock up is suitable for the purposes of the demo that's pretty much what I would suggest.
Axure is good for that kind of thing but you can also do it in Powerpoint (export presso as web pages)
Awsome thanks this is good to know. Turns out the they want an actual web dashboard (keep changing their minds, grr!) so doing the HTMl/CSS table view page and someone else is looking at the backend logic behind it. Thanks Howard for all your help.

If I understand you correctly:
- The system cannot yet produce the data to drive the dashboard
- The dashboard, now, need only exist for the purposes of a 'demo', which I assume is some kind of proof of concept test / requirements validation / sales marketing thing
So instead of building something 'real' that is both open to interface and requirements changes, discover exactly what the dashboard need do for the demo then fake that using anything good enough. You'll need to discover what good enough looks like though, but some things I've used in the past, in order of increasing realism / complexity
- Paper sketches
- Powerpoint
- Photoshop
- Keynote
- Visio
- Axure
- Flash
- PHP CodeIgnitor & JQuery
- Raw Ruby + SQL & HTML / CSS
My understanding could be completely wrong though, YMMV etc.
To clarify:
The system can produce the data to drive the dashboard, in the form of text strings, so something that can update a graph and summary table view using this data or a fake version will suffice.
The dashboard, now, need only exist for the purposes of a 'demo', which I assume is some kind of proof of concept test thing -Correct. Essentially, we want to be able to show if something in the system changes, the dashboard can be refreshed to reflect the change.
I think realism is definitely an important factor. Which leaves me with the following:
- Axure (never used but willing to give it a go)
- Flash (never used but willing to give it a go)
- PHP CodeIgnitor & JQuery
- Raw Ruby + SQL & HTML / CSS
With my novice understanding, if there is a script for how the presentation is going to go, would it be too obvious to make several HTML pages with a 'refresh' button, which is actually a link to a similar looking pages but with different stats (and faking that is it connected to the system)?
Thanks for all the help, you're a lifesaver!

Frameworks are two a penny these days. Real question here is how important is the product to the business? If it's mission critical then yeah, they need to know it's not something you are comfortable handling alone. If not, and its a pet project that can be done as and when, then look at it as a skills building exercise.
Its for demo purposes only (until that functionality is available in the bespoke system) so the main thing is having a solution that is quick and easy to create and use. The presentation is next week though (eek!). Thoughts?

FAO: Web Devs
I have been asked to produce a web dashboard for a bespoke IT system, to show summaries in table and graph view etc.
I used to know HTML/CSS/PHP/MySQL (made a website part of my dissertation years ago) and am re-learning at the moment. I think this is out of my depth. Are there any easy solutions/frameworks that exist for this sort of thing or should I kindly tell them this is out of my depth?

Are you able to get request a blood test from your GP?
depending on how nice your GP is...or just tell them you feel weak because of this diet your on and you want to get checked out. Make sure you ask for B12 specifically as it might not be part of the standard blood test. Also worth keeping a print out if you do them regularly (i.e. once a year) to track what diet tweaks help/hinder.
Long term vegan supplement wise, if you're interested, I would focus on B12 (500mcg daily) and Vitamin D during winter months or even summer months (this is England after all..)
Others not so regular- Iodine once a week and Omega 3 (1 or 2 tbsp daily from ground flax or chia seeds) if you're worried about healthy fats. However both of these I think are questionable.
Excellent resource:

It's a lovely chart. There does seem to be a trend with vegans and B12 coming from processed fortified foods.
Does anyone here avoid the them and opt for a supplement instead?
Yep. H&B's B12 5000mcg is fine. get a blood test to check levels. On a side note, if you're levels are low, you can get B12 on prescription but its cheaper from H&B.

I dunno 52/54ish? If I remember when we built it, it needs some work- the bottom bracket needs something doing it, I cant remember sorry. Remember the wheels being decent though. If you're interested PM me and I'll put you in touch with the owner.
Nice! What size: I'm 5"5. Could collect by van next week, :) have a single speed already but fancy another for longer rides.

When my team were still replying on 5 year old servers running SQL Server 2000, SQL Server Profiler was a good tool for analysing live activities. We moved to a 2008R2 shared cluster about the same time as we got the ANTS performance suite, so I don't know how you analyse the queries that are hapening in versions since 2005 (When SSMS was introduced).
ANTS is great btw.
We're using 2008.

- Which DBMS?
1A. If MS SQL, they have tools which can both predict the execution plan and tools which monitor active servers.
1B. If MySQL/MariaDB, InnoDB or MyISAM? - Are you joining on indexes/PKs?
- Yep MS SQL. Where can I find these tools and what are they called?
- I'll need to check on Tuesday (as its not my code) but I dont think so. Would this slows things down?
- Which DBMS?
