I've been to the Algarve a couple of times in winter (Jan, Feb) to ride. Once based in Almancil and once in Carvoeiro. As mentioned some lovely rides into the the hills in the north. Up to Monchique and Fóia is something I really enjoyed - bit of a distance from Faro though.

I was lucky and had a dry, not cold week but January can be a bit hit or miss with the weather.

Roads are pretty much empty which made a nice change from the UK.

Hi, these won't win any awards for style but I've got these unworn Shimano M087 in 43. I take an 8.5 usually and these fit perfectly - I think Shimano shoes often come up a bit small.
