Hi guys
Having a bit of a clear-out and wondered if the following are of any use to anyone:
Pair Weinmann type 500 brakes, manufactured 1986 according to the stamp on the metalwork, quick release feature. Used, but still usable (spring nice and firm!)
Litech handlebars and stem. Stem is 130mm centre to centre, for 1.125" fork / headset; handlebars are 560mm wide, 25mm diameter, almost flat with a slight sweep. Both are in a highly polished stainless steel of some kind. Combined weight 400g
Set Mallard quick release skewers. Front stamped "Spidel", rear stamped "Sachs Mallard", guessing that they're mid 1980's. Rear shinier than front.
I'm not in London, but would be more than happy to post to whoever's interested - just make a small donation in lieu to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal
thanks

Hi all
I've now finished my fixie build project, based on a (I'm fairly certain) late 1970's Holdsworth Mistral frame that I had resprayed at Argos Racing Cycles in Bristol.
As you will see in the photo, it's got two brakes. This is because:
- I live on the edge of the Cotswolds and it's pretty hilly here
- I'm a big girl's blouse
I took it for a quick spin up and down the road when I'd finished it, it felt fantastic! Looking forward to a longer ride.
If anyone is interested / as sad as me, I've put more photos and the project saga on my website: http://www.charleshookfrancis.co.uk/Fixie_Bike_Build.html
Hoping for a summer full of fixed fun!

Hi all
I am having terrible trouble trying to source a new Shimano 1" threaded headset, preferably Ultegra or 105. I've scoured all the usual internet haunts only to find that they're all out of stock. Apparently, Shimano have stopped making them now, so it's just a case of trying to get lucky.
I'm after a silver headset (to go with my colour scheme!), and don't mind a decent alternative to Shimano if I can find it - can anyone recommend a shop / website?
On a broader note, is there likely to be a longer term issue with older 1" steerer tube bikes if manufacturers stop making such headsets, and do the newer OTP fixies use the 1 1/8" standard?
thanks in advance for your help

Great advice, thanks!
Think I'll go for wearing the trunk undies underneath, this would be for a 30 min ish ride to somewhere where I wanted to look a bit presentable (rather than turning up in lycra and feeling like a proper charlie)
I really like the look of the Swrve stuff, might give their herringbone shorts a try!

Hi chaps
This might sound like a really stupid question
I'm toying with the idea of getting some of those rather natty Rapha fixed shorts, but am a bit unsure about whether you wear them with lycra shorts / a liner underneath, or do you go commando
Does anyone have any words of wisdom?
Furthermore, are there any other similar shorts on the market that aren't quite so eye-wateringly expensive?
Thanks in advance for any advice

Currently on my third build
First was a winter road bike based on a Ribble frame and mixture of new bits and parts from my older winter bike. Did that about three years ago now, felt really good the first time I took it out.
Last May I built up a singlespeed mountain bike on a Trek 8500, which I bought secondhand as a geared bike. It's a real blast to ride, really responsive, and it's surprising what climbs you can get up on the 32x16 gear.
My current build is a fixie based on a vintage steel frame, which I'm really looking forward to riding!
Having started building now, I think that I'm feeding an addiction. Building bikes and riding them is a fully holistic experience, you really feel the bike when you've assembled it from parts, or stripped it right down and rebuilt it.

Fruitbat, thanks for your suggestion
Have done some checking, and I don't think that it is a Carton, as the format of the frame number doesn't match, details obtained from http://www.carltoncycles.me.uk/details/dating.htm
Interestingly, I did see a picture of a late 70s Raleigh with the extra brake bridge, but again the frame number format would be different. I also saw a picture of a Raleigh track bike from the 70s that had the wrap over seat stays, but that obviously had track dropouts.

Hi
The frame number reads “962” in large numerals, then upside down the numbers “235” are also stamped.
The other avenue that I'll explore is that the frame had been resprayed some time ago, the resprayer's sticker can be seen above the bottom bracket - it's not impossible that they might have some record of their work. The firm is API of North Chingford, although the telephone number starts "081" so it's anybody's guess if they're still in business.
thanks

Hi all
Greetings from Gloucestershire (yes, I know that's a bit outside London), have just joined the Forum as another rich source of fixie-related info.
I'm after a bit of assistance confirming the identity of a frame that I bought a few months ago.
I've put some detailed photos of the bike on my website http://www.charleshookfrancis.co.uk/Fixie_Bike_Build.html.
The nice chap that I bought the bike off believed that it was a Holdsworth Mistral from the late 60s / early 70s. Checking out the website http://homepage.ntlworld.com/nkilgariff/ would seem to support this (especially the wrapover seat stays, which I don't think was all that common), however I'm a bit concerned that my frame doesn't have the frame number stamped in the fork steerer tube as was apparently the way with Holdsworths.
As I'm planning to get the frame professionally resprayed, and would like to add period manufacturer's decals, I'd be very grateful for any assistance in identifying this lovely frame.
Thanks, and a Happy New Year to all
Barnaby
Saddle now sold, but seatpost & clamp still available!
