This happened last week. Rider in critical condition still. Happened yards from where Lukasz Binkowski was killed just a few months ago. Our thoughts and wishes for this latest casualty’s recovery, but all we have heard so far I’m so sorry to say doesn’t support that outcome. We are all thinking of the rider and their family at this point. I’ll post elsewhere on what action we (Lewisham Cyclists) are planning to take to get safety measures for vulnerable road users on this bit of road.
-
Once again, condolences to his family and friends. If anyone knows the family and thinks it’s appropriate to ask (appreciate it may not be) a lot of local people have asked Lewisham Cyclists about organising a ghost bike and/or memorial ride to express condolences. LC would organise a ghost bike but not without family’s agreement.

We have not heard definitively how the collision occurred. But information from a local seems to indicate that both driver and rider were heading in same direction. But road so narrow, it seems lorry driver may have clipped rider. I don’t want to speculate further as it’s possible riders loved ones may see this. And speculation won’t help them at all.
-
Not the time or place to discuss I know. First thoughts with and condolences to riders loved ones. Mindful of their awful loss. But local cyclists so so angry about this. Have wanted safe space on this road for long time. And day after a pedestrian injured on same road just other side of the town centre.

The incident began at the junction of Rolt St and Childers St. Childers St is part of Quietway 1, fairly new then. Rolt St had just been made one way for motor traffic with a contraflow for cyclists. Drivers were ignoring the new one way, and, as far as we know, from local witnesses we have heard from, the driver who killed Antonio had tried to do just this, and Antonio had been attempting to explain to him what he was doing wrong. What exactly happened next is not exactly clear. But seems driver may well have been abusive, some reports say he got out of car, but that’s not absolutely clear, then got back, drove at Antonio. But again, not exactly clear. What is clear is that somehow driver ended up dragging Antonio along, possibly with his bike, into Childers St and then stopped, abandoned car and left the scene. Bystanders came to help, called ambulance etc.

Rest in peace, Antonio. He was well known in the local community. I know he rode out with Southwark Cyclists sometimes. Eight years doesn’t seem like much given what the driver actually did! I’d at least like to know this person could never get behind the wheel of a car legally ever again. Doesn’t seem right he could be driving round our local streets again in just a few years time. Thinking of Antonio’s friends and family right now.

In terms of the distance you’re covering, that’s fine. You could probably do more, depending on your fitness and experience. But if you want time to enjoy and explore a bit, maybe have the flexibility to take a day out even, or not as you wish, that kind of lower mileage is better, in my opinion, than pushing to cover double that or more, as I used to do on my first few cyclecamping tours. You miss so much, if you rush it, believe me. I guess my advice would be, if this schedule and route works for you this time, it’s fine. Nothing wrong with it. Just accept there’s a lot you’ll miss. This time. Of course, you’ll love it so much, you’ll be back and try to cover some of the stuff you’ve missed! Or, it will rain solidly the whole week, you’ll be miserable, wet and cold the whole time and all you’ll see is mist. Then you’ll still have to come back again, to really discover how beautiful it all was!

Rhenigidale...amazing road to get to this, but you have to ride out and back up. Great walk from the hostel along the beach to Tarbert. You can book a place on the school bus back. https://scontent-lht6-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/50402508_10155817374843204_1325024421865324544_n.jpg?_nc_cat=110&_nc_ht=scontent-lht6-1.xx&oh=ef2d5bcde35b0ed2b1f173f199f7e756&oe=5CCD9499&dl=1

They’re one reason I’d make the Outer Hebrides, starting in Barra or Vatersay and heading north, a trip in itself. Stayed at all of them over the years and they are all in beautiful locations and never turn people away. Well they didn’t up till 5 years ago, which was when I was there last. Below is Howmore hostel and the beach below.

Road or off road? All I can say is, I go up every NY (my daughter lives way up north, now) and have been able to ride probably 70 per cent of the time. But you have to be prepared for snow, ice, awful weather and possibly abandoning plans, or revising at any rate. If you’re alone, make sure someone knows where you are and where you’re meant to be. We often go to the west coast, and the main roads are generally kept clear. Whether or not the weather is too grim depends on your tolerance and experience levels, and I don’t know what they are.

Does nobody want these? They are absolutely free. Just arrange to meet me at our container and pick them up. If we had the space, time and a bit of spare cash we’d definitely not let them go. We’d spend a bit of time and money freeing up the stuck parts and turning them into basic beater singlespeeds probably. Unfortunately, the people to whom we provide cheap refurbs don’t generally want fixed or singlespeed, so it's not worth Lewisham Cyclists while doing it.
If transport is a problem, I could drop them round to someone in our cargotrike, as long as it’s within a three miles radius of SE23. Would just really like someone to make use of these frames.
Seems the dinner hour has been brought forward for the folk we are sharing it with so looks like I can’t make it after all. Sorry folks…enjoy the ride
