I'm after a bike for my girlfriend. Something cheap and reliable. She want's a hybrid but a road or mountain bike would do as she doesn't ever go very far. Geared, single-speed or whatever (not fixed). Any suggestions. She's around 5"7' so nothing too big please!
Oh, I have parts to build up a suitable road frame so that might do too.

I never used these people so can't recommend them personally, but other people seem to speak well of them.

I feel your pain and you probably don't want to hear this..but...
If you really, really must lock your bike in public, you have to expect that one day, statistically speaking, you'll come out to find it dented, knackered or not there any more. I have a cheap but perfectly good bike reserved for this purpose. Save your decent bikes for good long rides when you can enjoy them.
Sorry for your loss though, sucks when it happens...

I got some cheapo digital calipers off eBay for around £8 delivered. They're surprisingly well made and very accurate as far as I can tell.
They look like these ones:

I guess the optimum depends on fitness. I'm thoroughly unfit but run 42x16 on one of my bikes and 43x16 on the other and both are fine for me. I think you would notice the difference going to 18T, I'm considering changing my 43x16 to a 17T.
Note: I mostly just cycle East to West (or vice versa) which is obviously fairly flat. If you regularly go up hills I'd go for a lower gear still.
