The spokes are huge due to the chance's of crashing and the ball hitting the wheels and mallet hits etc 12'' guage spokes if any one knows where i could buy them let me know and there is a pint for you in dublin
the chain we use is a off a motor bikes as i have seen many time bmx chains break and even mountain bike chains break . -
Greasy slag
No larger wheels are no help as the bike will become longer and even if you had a lie-back saddle piller you would not be able to get the ball at the rear wheel if you sheild the ball using the rear wheel or to pass the ball across the back of your rear wheel. The french use 24inch the trad polo teams in England Ireland and Scotland use 26''inch and 3/8 wheels.
I often pass and drib-bull with the pass under the bottom brackit if you feel the ball is to big and finding it hard turn your wheel at a slight angle and the area under your bottom brackit has now increased due to the wheel angle. This is one great way to turn the oppsition on there arse.
Another way with the lie back saddle piller is lean back and pull a the frount wheel up off the ground and pass the ball under the wheel and the closer the ball is to your the back wheel doing this the more chance the ball will chip or rise.
try it in a game you will see that the oppistion will be out of the game as the ball is now on your off-side going forward while he is going the oppsite way (right side )and is now out of the game as he has to turn around and chase after you.

Handle bars not great if they were a bit higher and turned up and then back the are the best for control and stooting. you need blance for shooting and passing and any bike that has two or more gears is at a loss in tight turns and shooting.
Polo bikes can be light or heave but the gearing on the bikes must be at one with the rider if the gear is to high and he is a defender he wont be able to defend in close contact ( GET THE MOVING )but will be not able to chase down a player which a has a lower gear which will make space fast and shoot so you put a mid feild player with the higher gear to be able to ride down the the attack team in a lower amount of spinning and he also can gain speed and get up feild from his back line to a mid feild in less turns of the peddles if the ball is passed to a forward player.
Any one who i ever seen riding a bike with gear leavers and break leavers all ways drops the ball while playing.
Ride a gear that suits your weight and fitness. Speed never won any game passing and a team working as one all ways win. -

ye were doing a grass polo tournament in dublin April 24th and 25th,
30 euro to enter it pays for lunchs etc
teams from france england scotland USA and ireland battle it out games after games might be 40 min long a game 4 chucka .
limited space due to time its part of the european grass cup it also played for in kent seven oaks in june and in paris france late september. -
There are great things that can be drawn from the two games you guys are have great bike control and and us grass polo we use the ball to work the area but the spacing behind the bottom brackit is for that you can have a spear set of wheels one set for grass and a other set for hard court.
the scotish lads use astro in the winter and its works for them so hard court is the best to train on if you ask me as it really make the passing so important and direct to the wheel. -

if you are riding wheels 27 inchs the polo bike is long think of polo bike like a small car in the city small the car easier to nip in and out of.
in grass polo the there is five players thats ten lads or ladys on a pitch it can get busy.
but if can ride 27 inch fair play what size is your peddel cranks? -
sorry lads
forgot to say all are bikes are over forty years old and are messured in inchs not mm but the speed way tyres have a nobbel tyre even on the side so that even when the bike is turning the tyre still has a grip to turn on.
we use steel rims 26 3/8 inch as the more easer to bend back in to shapeafter folding them and we also use motor bike spokes and moter bike chains as they never break from mallet hits or ball hits.
modern day rims dont hold up to a wheel folding.
the frames were made by Allin cycles ltd 57-59 whitehorse road, Croydon
we also have polo bikes from Norman cycles Asford, Kent
any come across any of them before?
the frames just never give up after 40 to 60 years of playing on them
we tried new frames they just break up the head sets or the frames snap due to a crash or two.
nice polo bikes you have lads and ladys have to say. -
the french always have those large tyres
they are really hard to push though long grass and there is no grip off them the french always fall off on tight turns.
they also use a 24 inch wheel to allow the feet not to catch the frount wheel.if you ride a 26 and 3/8 wheel you ride on your toes to allow for wheel not to catch your feet when turning.
use speed way tyres on grass and high presure the bike will role on the grass and turn much easier and to can spin the bike around while peddling.

start of the new sesion over here and a few bike were set to the bike shop for new bottom brakets with cotter pins and peddle stems where you looking to get some as i can get the bike shops number for you or i can get them and i could send them over to you for trad bikes.
i seen a few lads need lie back saddle pillers.
you need to welled two bars to getter because if you bend the saddle piller that goes down the seat tube you will do one of two things and damage will be done which will cost you more money to fix.
1 saddle piller down tube will crack
2 lie back saddle piller will foldyou need the same die as the saddle down tube. Dont use a sleve when tighting you damage the bike saddle down tube.
two pipes welled them to getter make sure the die is same as some bike saddle down tube differs be a were.

peddle cranks!!! were to get them
you should get these off kids bikes for the low gears easy to peddle so do go-carts have them as well look out for them in skips or bike shops should just give you one to try them out.
we just then weld them on to the peddle crank make sure its true or you will break the chain.
archy is the man for the tyres we buy all our tyres of him as well.
as for the mallets we are getting new one sent to us this week i fill you in on what there like from down under. -
polo boy from dublin hear.
just reading some of your emails hear is a few answers for i hope.
the mallets you need galaxco mallet is too wide and will have too be shortend and then sanded down. the angle of the mallet head is different on a bike than a horse but they are a good starting mallet to use.
the lie back saddle piller is very inportant as iy will allow the rider to play the ball around his back wheel and pass the ball on forward on his left side of the bike to his frount wheel.
it also puts all the rides weight over the back wheel so it does not slide from under him as he turns and while playing the ball.
if you can get speed way tyres they are the best to use on grass and tar.
good luck for now
