I've just bought a pair of these for myself and additional pairs as Christmas presents. I must say at £11.38 per pair I'm chuffed to bits. My max so far is 146rpm
I feel ‘comfortable’ sustaining about 115rpm

I know a lot of you won’t spoil the lines of their beautiful fixed-gear grods with anything as modern-ugly as a cyclocomputer, but for those who do, here’s how I derived my rpm (alternatively use Rabbit http://software.bareknucklebrigade.com/rabbit.applet.html to give an approximation.) :

I’m running ‘49T x 20T ‘
(165mm cranks
700c x 32mm tyres)

Max speed achieved so far a modest 28.8mph (Cateye computer says)

49/20x27 = 66.15 ‘gear inches’
66.15 x pi = 207.82 ‘development’ (inches)

[1mph = 1056 inches-per-minute]

28.8 x 1056 = 30412.80 inches-per-minute

30412.80/207.82 = ***146.34rpm

***Legs going like 'bees wings' let me tell you!
But need to HTFU and break the 30mph barrier now (152.44rpm)...

Although it is a torch it is the best bicycle light I have owned. Good bang-for-buck value. I use the same velcro-fastening Lockfish mount as Charlotte - easily transfers between bikes. I want the head-strap accessory thingy so that I can throw away my crappy Frenchie Petzel headtorch...

If you're really trying to stick to the budget, have a look at Fenix torches.

I have the L2DQ5, but they do cheaper, like the E20, which runs on AA batteries, so your girlfriend can use rechargeables or primary cells. The run time's good (over 3 hours) and it'll punch a hell of a hole in the night for the money. If you can stretch to the L2DQ5 or similar, do have a look at it, because it has a "tactical strobe" mode that is 100% full of awesome WIN.

Nobody misses me when I'm rolling with that (although beware for pedestrians collapsing in front of you from epileptic fits...)

My wifey had one of these... sold it last year. Lovely bike! It was a very girly shade of pink metallic called 'Fuschia Pearl' IIRC and was new in 1985 - complete with the Reynolds 531 50th anniversary stickers. The Suntour gears were class...still have an old VX rear mech somewheres..

... so what are people's opinions on the best pair of 'casual' shoes for use with Atacs?

I am new to Time pedals - have just bought some 'Atac Roc S' and want some new shoes to go with them rather than swapping the SPD cleats on my old shoes. (For SPD pedals I have used Northwave, Cannondale & Shimano shoes for commuting, Sidi Dominator for touring and Sunday best, Scott ones for my MTB. The Northwave ones have probably been the best casual/commuting shoe.)
