25 miles each way is fairly hefty, but do-able fixed as the best route to Slough follows the Thames so is pancake flat.
From Richmond, head down to Kingston, over Kingston bridge, turn left, ride past Hampton Court grounds, turn right at the roundabout by Hampton Court then follow this road all the way to Chertsey. There are a few minor roads from Chertsey through to Staines that you can follow, then head over Runnymede and into Windsor. From Windsor to Slough is pretty straightforward I think, but depends where in Slough you are goin.
Mate very useful, I will dry run this, glad to see there's an alternative to A4 all the way...

Cheers Rowhan - dry run rides are definitely the way forward. I start a week on Monday, hope to do the ride this coming Sat to scope it out.
Corny! All good? I'm used to 100 mile a week from a past job, so the longer ride doesn't faze me...it can take just as long being stuck in some suits armpit whilst held in a tunnel...rather be a master of my own destiny...maybe this is my excuse to spec up a new bike then..

So, first post and appearance for me on LFGSS in sometime...good to be back and see all seems familiar.
I have a change in job that means that my usual 8 mile each way (SE to W London) is now changing from having to go Peckham to Slough most days.
Loathed to get a Brompton and do the Paddington to Hell express, I'm wondering, could I ride it?
It's 25.1 miles each way according to gmaps, going A4020 to avoid the A4 which i imagine would be shit during commute times?
Do you hardy type commute such distances? And if so, fixed?
I don't know the roads west of Richmond and if they have lumpy bits...may I need to give in to gears?

Umm bit of a weird one this. I'm organising my company's Christmas do, and I want to create a treasure huntey/alley catty type thing through London.
But most are fat office types that wouldn't know a bike unless it ran them over (with the exception of some lovely cycle to work nodders and one fellow fixed).
Basically I want to, bit like challenge Anneka (who on the forum can remember her?), where I get them to identify what the pub is based on clues, they go to pub, down a round, work out next clue and then so on.
To save their chubby little paws, was thinking a fleet of rickshaws would be awesome. Load em in the back and some poor sod would be paid to ferry round my colleagues.
Does anyone here work in the tourist ferrying industry? Would need a few rickshaws, and so if anyone is in the business, or knows a forumenger who is, be great if you could point me in right direction.

street lights make your shadow massive, then you pass under and you disappear before you pass out the other side and you're big again.
fuck is that what that is? or are THEY really chasing me....
I love wearing my herringbone swrve shorts with green knee high socks, makes me feel like its the tweed run all over again.

I used to go a similar way, backstreets to skirt through denmark hill, stockwell, clapham north and come up by battersea dogs home then head to wandsworth along batt park road, then upper richmond road , but went via barnes bridge through past chiswick station...much less involvement with traffic, but found some of them roads south of the river not as fast...though yeah upper richmond road is def fast...

Aren't they just? I did Ben Macdui and Carn a' Mhaim the other Summer with a bunch of Paramo types......'join ussssssssssss' constantly......weird fruit teas in their flasks you name it.....
indeed, though I did accept the invitation to stroke the rustle free fabric...
randomly found out on sunday that my cousins missus is part of the paramo team...mmm discounts me thinks...

I'm looking for a good full length trouser for winter communter cycling. Has anyone had experience with these ones?
http://www.swrve.co.uk/softshell%20trouser.html#
Also how does the material look i.e does it still look like cotton or does it have a shell suit-ish aesthetic.
Thanks
i've got the swvre wwr 3/4 shorts which I think are the same material. if so then yes quick drying, wind proof, water resistant and kept me fine in rain.
soft to feel and great against skin with a nice stretch to them, nothing like the hideous feel of overtrousers.
plus swvre stuff, as you'd see throught the forum is v highly rated generally and i'm v happy with all my purchases.

for me, I did a financial analysis last weekend. anal as hell, but created pie charts for the last 3 months of spending, and the biggest chunk was drinking/meals out...and that's with me building a frigging bike in that period.
now, I write everything down...everything. and that makes me question whether I need to have those 3 pints after work with an actually dull work colleague. or at home, instead of always having a medley of ales, i've really got into lime n tonic water.
result, I reckon I could save hundreds a month as well as all the health and lifestyle benefits above, without actually using willpower to abstain...its more an economic decision as to whether I want to spend my cash on something tangiable...
like a mercian

the fear's understandable though, I got it the other day hurtling from north to south across vauxhall bridge, just making the lights by vauxhall station heading past vaux tavern, it was dark, I was accelerating away from the pelaton including the car n mopeds, and failed to see an asteriod impact disguising itself as your average pothole...
rear wheel left ground as I bucked it forward, endoed for a few metres as I managed to get weight back quick enough to avoid face plant, landed with a skid, fking whooping it out due to exhiliration...
then thought there was a fking ton of cars behind me that would've squish over me should I have not been able to, somewhat impressively for me, pull off that endo roll...
fear all the way home...combined with elation over skillz

I see South Easties don't get a look in...But then again, probably because we can't frigging make our mind up where we wanna drink.
Not on the list, but Hermits Cave...ok beers, cute staff, lots of bike lock ups outside with space to drink/smoke outside opp your bikes, interesting locals...
and 5 mins from my house -
I agree, Paramo > *. It's the choice of certain mountain rescue teams for a reason...
want me to sort a group buy for some bwahaha :-)
Forgive further discussion/hijack Rik (my 2p Icebreaker all the way) but as regards Paramo they've got their annual Paramo sale coming up.
Uplands Community College, Lower High Street, Wadhurst, East Sussex, TN5 6AZ
on Saturday 5 December from 10.00-15.00.Not the most glamorous location and a bit of a jumble sale rummage, but you can get some serious bargains on top notch gear....just be wary, Paramo converts are little bit geek freak scary ;)
-
I have a decent event jacket I did the 24 peaks in - even with merino base layer I sweated like a rapist (and it was properly cold)..... honestly can't tell the difference between event & gore-tex
ahhh, that's probably because you didn't do it in a Paramo...
having had eVent (most breathable and previous bike favourite), XCR (tough as nails, great for climbing, especially in granite chimneys!) and PacLite (stashes away as my backup jacket for hiking/climbing but sweat fest when cycling), Paramo is the most breathable yet.
right, back to bike radar...

I have a brand new Wingman messenger bag for sale. I bought it from the Cycle Show at Excel in Jan for £115, had it delivered (as they had sold out of all stock) and when it arrived realised I was pretty skint so have never opened the packaging. Meant to send it back for a refund...and now its been 6 months winding up the GF whilst sitting in the hallway...
So over to you lovely forumungers. If you've never heard of the Wingman, it's this awesome messenger that has all the usual messenger bag specifics (quick release buckle, stabiliser strap etc) but designed to carry a full suit along with shoes, laptop etc. I was blown away by it at the show, but of course, when do I wear a suit to work so I don't really need this. My mate uses his regularly for work and does fit his laptop in there, which one of the reviews said he couldn't.

The one I have for sale is black outside with a green liner like in the reviews.
They've come down in price since I bought mine, but I'd take £90 for it, happy to meet up somewhere in London and deliver it still sealed in it's box.
